I have a 1996 Cougar with around 218k on it. When the car is cooling off after a drive I hear a loud noise every few minutes. It sounds like a hammer hitting metal. I figure it is just some metal contracting as it cools off but the noise is starting to drive me crazy. This is not a recent development, as the car has done it since I bought it in 2002.
Anybody else have a similar noise on their Marks or MN-12 cars or ideas on what could be causing that type of noise as it cools off? I've tried poking around waiting for the noise to go off, but it is so random and short it is hard to pin point where it is coming from.
