how to remove the top of dash only.the defrost grill opening?97M8

I hope I donnot have to remove the whole dash.
The paint on this plastic piece is gooey and I want to repaint it.

Any help or diagrams would be awesome.thanks

Take a trim removal tool or a strong putty knife and insert it straight down into the crack between the dashboard top and the soft vinyl piece that is the "crash pad". pry it up and it just pops off.
