Cam shim Installation

here is some brand new technical info for this new site.

A couple weeks ago Eli and I installed a cam shim on his car. This cam shim is make to fix an engineering flaw in the 4.6 DOHC. With the shim in it correctly applies tension to the upper part of the passenger side cam chain.
Here are some pics of the installation

This first pic is of the drivers side valve cover, with the spark plugs removed, and passenger side fuel rails removed to get the FPR out of the way enough to take the valve cover off.

here is the valve cover out of the car, that is the valve cover gasket that is kinda just hanging there in the cover

Here are the cam shims that I make in my hand.

here is a pic of where the shim goes. there are only the two bolts that you have to remove to install the shim.

Looks like in this pic i am taking the bolts out

here I am working away like a slave on Eli's car.

Unfortunatly I have installed two shims on mark VIII's and still do not have dyno results. Eli noticed a lot smoother idle, but HP figures are hard to guess. This shim helps to provide a more accurate timing to the passenger side bank of cyl's. With this cam shim it increases max rpm from 9250 to 9500 rpms's which is when the valves start to float with stock valve train.

RE: Cam shim Installation

I'm assuming that would work on gen 2's as well?

That looks like a modification i would have been scared of not too long ago. But now that my friends Spirit is torn down to the bare block in my garage, and i (think) i know how to put it back together again, i'm a little more confident.

Has it made any difference on the gtech?

WOW 9500 RPM's, should you install a kelvar scattersheild or would a standard bullit proof vest protect you in the explosion? :)

RE: Cam shim Installation

When my alt comes back next week Joe and I will get some back to back dyno runs. Except Eli was telling me he thinks the dyon we go to is all screwy joe, maybe we should look elsewhere?

RE: Cam shim Installation

Well once dyno results are in let me know how much for the shim. I would be interrested in one for my car. I have seen a copy of this product selling for $75 on a site. If you can meet or beat this price I would gladly fork over the dough. By the way the install pics really helped too! I feel I would have no problem with the install after seeing the step by step pics.

RE: Cam shim Installation

Yea old news... same engine. I was planning on selling them to members for 25$ and non LOD members 60$ I have a whole stack of them here.

Reguardless, the red whore ran a 14.311 @ 100 at Tri-State Dragway today with just a cam shim, ported intake amd Pro-M MAF, and 109,000 miles on the clock. I personally do not have but 200$ tied up in mods in this car. I have yet to see anyone else run that fast with such little amount of mods. Obviosly the mods I choose are worth while. There is a lot of snake oil out there. Time slips and dyno sheets are proof.

Geno do you have any pics of the cam shim isntall on your car? Maybe you had a better way of gettign it on there than I did. Eli's valve cover was a little tough to get off.

RE: Cam shim Installation

Eli had mentioned his car had bee in an accident, hence the difficulty with the valver cover. My wife used to have a t-bird that was in an accident, afterwards to change the oil filter you had to jack the engine up.

RE: Cam shim Installation

There are a load of pics on the "other" board if you search the archives.

I do not have any shim install specific pics, however you can probobly see it in the some of the engine pics when I put the last engine in the car.

The second engine in my car I put the cam shim in.

This engine our machinists installed it.

Ken Kropac is right there at 14.34 @100 and change with just an exhaust.

Like I said, I haven't personnaly seen any gains from it at all.

As for the valve cover, thats the easy side.
The drivers side is the bitch, but I can still do those without removing the brake booster.

RE: Cam shim Installation

On my car, the drivers side is easy since it's away from the side. The passenger side is tight against the shock tower.

RE: Cam shim Installation

Time slips where are the time slips

You will have to wait for Ken to show up here. He posted these on the "Other" board when he made those passes.

You didn't see it?

RE: Cam shim Installation

DOHC,the 9500 caught me a little off guard too.
