Loud Engine

When I get above 80MPH my 98 MarkVIII engine emits a fairly loud sound which gets louder the faster I go. Also, my rear view mirror tends to vibrate which causes a distorted view of traffic behind me. My tires were balanced (it took them twice to get it right) and I do not have any front end shimmies. Is the loud engine sound typical of 98 MarkVIII's? Any experiences on these topics would be appreciated.

RE: Loud Engine

Sounds like you have a driveline vibration (judging by the vibrating rear view mirror), which is not unusual on these cars. Some folks have had good results switching to an aftermarket driveshaft. If it were me, that'd be the first thing I'd change.

Until you get this fixed, try to stay at speeds where it doesn't vibrate. If it's bad enough or happens long enough, that vibe can destroy your tranny's tailshaft and your rear end.

RE: Loud Engine

I fought the vibe boom for years - finally cured it with a MMC driveshaft and also:

New wheels
new tire
new control arms
GSP 9700 balance
alignment
