transmission downshifting

At highway speeds my transmission will occasionally downshift on its own and stay there for 4-5 seconds, then it goes back into its proper gear. I know that this has been talked about before but I couldn't find it in the archives. Thanks for your help!

RE: transmission downshifting

It might be the MLPS a sensor outside the transmission, costs about 80$ + installation.

My '94 does that once in a very rare blue moon, and I have a '95 T-bird that's notorious for that exact same problem. Where's the sensor located???

RE: transmission downshifting

I had this problem when I was driving to Carlisle a year before last. Remove battery power (reset the computer) and see if it goes away for awhile. If so, your problem is a bad speed chip. If it does not go away, it is the shift lever position sensor.

A replacement chip from Geno fixed my problem. He had a bad batch of chips come through his shop.

RE: transmission downshifting

Should I get the MLPS or just the neutral safety switch? Ford dealer here wants 120 outrageous bucks!
Thanks, Rich
