Engine detailing - aluminum parts

I just read the thread in the paint forum about engine detailing, and rather than hijack driller's thread any longer, I figured I'd start a new one.

My question has to do with the aluminum parts, like the heads and even some of the fittings and such. I noticed that many of those parts get a corrosion that looks like the metal is flaking or like it has some awful whitish-gray rash. Is there anything that will clean that stuff off? Or is the only alternative a wire brush?

Just for the record - aluminum "oxidizes" - reacts with the "stuff" in the air and basically "rusts" in its own way.

All I've ever done is wire brush or lightly sand off the yuck and then buff the part with a cloth wheel. Topped off the result with a clear spray.

I've never been satisfied either.

I, too, need something better.
