Need help on basic repainting

I got tired of seeing those horrible clear-coat fade splotches on my rear A pillars, so I decided to try to do a little shadetree repainting.

I cleaned the areas to be painted, wetsanded them, and then sprayed 2 coats of black and 2 coats of clearcoat. I even got the factory orange peel finish. :)

I bought some superfine (P800) sandpaper, Meguiar's fine cut rubbing compound, and Meguiar's #9 swirl remover. And I have no idea what to do next to get the repainted sections to match the rest of the car.

Keep in mind that I'm not looking for a show-quality finish - I just want the paint to blend in and be fairly uniform with the rest of the car.

Can someone give me the basics, here?

Thanks!

That's pretty much it. good luck. use plenty of water when you're wetsanding.

Thanks, Dave. Well, it looks better than it did before. That's about all I can say...

I'll redo the panels next month (and repaint the entire A pillars). There's a natural seam at the quarterpanel that I should have made use of. Instead, I have a nice line where old paint meets new.

I don't think you're supposed to wax it for like 90 days after you lay down new paint. It is still curing and the wax seals it from the air when it is trying to let out solvents and stuff. That said, I hope your fix works out and I'd like to see pics, mine has the same issue on the driver's side and every paint shop says "oh, we'd have to repaint the whole car."

to make it look PERFECTLY even they would.

i have a red 94 mark8 and the entire rear bumper has faded clear coat, and i have a small fiberglass patch on my hood i need to paint over. im thinking ill just repaint the whole car, the same color but still. the chrome is peeling so im looking at what some others have mentioned and taking some bondo to fill in where the chrome is and painting over the whole thing. then i want to get some chameleon and see if i cant redo the pinstripes (which are also peeling) in chameleon paint as opposed to their grey decals. maybe do them a slight thicker.....}(

Thanks, Craig. I actually haven't waxed the areas yet (for that very reason!) Here's some pics taken after the final polishing. The lines are pretty much visible all the time up close - especially in direct sunlight. The color boundary probably won't be as visible if I apply rubbing compound/polish the rest of the A pillar. But I'm still going to repaint the pillars all the way to the quarterpanel seams...

That looks pretty good. You always see the line that you should have masked on after you finish. I did a little bumper cover spot fix on my crown vic one time that had the same effect. My peeling paint is actually mostly on the fender where it meets the pillar, so I don't know what I'll do. I was thinking of maybe just shooting it with clear to see if it will make it all shiny again. I just got a compressor and spray gun so have been thinking of little projects to try it out.
