End of Oldsmobile

RE: End of Oldsmobile

Just horrble! The very first American Car is biting the dust. So sad. The Japanese makers are celebrating, for sure. 2 Down (Plymouth & Oldsmobile) and only 8 to go:
Cadillac/Buick/Pontiac/Chevrolet/Saturn/Lincoln/Mercury/Ford. Lost 2 in the last 3 years, at that rate it should only take 4 years to get rid of the rest. Someone sent me this regarding Olds:

Can you name the 10 oldest, conitinously in business American Corporations, and the dates they began?

Here was the answer that they supplied. I assume it's correct. No time to verify:-

#1. Proctor & Gamble - 1837
#2. Jello - 1845
#3. Arm & Hammer - 1846
#4. Western Union - 1851
#5. American Telephone & Telegraph (AT&T) - 1875
#6. Coca-Cola Bottling Corportaion - 1886
#7. Kodak Film & Camera Corp. - 1888
#8. Oldsmobile Motor Car - 1897
#9. Quaker Oats - 1901
10. Ford Motor Company - 1903

and we lose one this week. ;(

RE: End of Oldsmobile

Since Oldsmobile became part of GM in November 1908 it has not been a corporation for almost 96 years now.

RE: End of Oldsmobile

If american automotive manufactorers continued with old products and poor customer satisfaction this is how they all will end, thats just the way it is.

RE: End of Oldsmobile

I saw in the business section Sunday that Mitsubishi was having cash flow issues. Billion dollars in debt or something like that.

RE: End of Oldsmobile

I saw it too, with a real bad "spin" on it - Gosh the one I saw was like 50 yards away from an obituary ! Time to consider a nice Diamante to help them out :D

RE: End of Oldsmobile

Well, I see what you guys are saying about survival of the fittest and all, but they didn't even try, I mean, they can bring back the GTO, they are making some neat coupe for Buick, come on, they could have done better for Oldsmobile.

RE: End of Oldsmobile

Sad. I've mourned the loss of many car brands over the years but this one should not have gone away. If GM had to kill a brand they should have chose one that did not haave the long history Oldsmobile has.

My tribute in the lyrics of a song.

In My Merry Oldsmobile
Words by Vincent Bryan, Music by Gus Edwards

Verse 1: Young Johnnie Steele has an Oldsmobile. He loves a dear little girl.
She is the queen of his gas machine. She has his heart in a whirl.
Now when they go for a spin, you know, she tries to learn his auto, so
He lets her steer while he gets her ear, and whispers soft and low;

Chorus: Come away with me Lucile in my merry Oldsmobile
Down the road of life we’ll fly automo-bubbling you and I.
To the church we’ll swiftly steal, then our wedding bells will peal,
You can go as far you like with me, In my merry Oldsmobile.

Verse 2: They love to spark in the dark old park, as they go flying along,
She says she knows why his motor goes; his sparker’s awfully strong.
Each day they spoon to the engine’s tune, their honeymoon will happen soon,
He’ll win Lucile with his Oldsmobile and then he’ll fondly croon;

Chorus: Come away with me Lucile in my merry Oldsmobile
Down the road of life we’ll fly automo-bubbling you and I.
To the church we’ll swiftly steal, then our wedding bells will peal,
You can go as far you like with me, In my merry Oldsmobile.

Patter Chorus: Come away Lucile ‘cause if I may Lucile I want to take you for my bride,
And we’ll chug along and always sing a song as down the road of life we fly
Even though my car is old and squeaky now it’s better than a horse or train.
When I pull the throttle out and put her into third you think you’re in a plane.
To the church we’re heading for a quiet wedding then I’ll crank her up and take the wheel
And away we’ll go my honey, they will know my honey that our love is real.
You can go as far you like with me, In my merry Oldsmobile,
My merry Oldsmobile.

Or a more contemporary song.

455 Rocket by Kathy Mattea. written by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings

Mr Smith had an Oldsmobile,
Baby-blue with wire wheels.
I took her home the day she was advertised.
He said she leaked when it would rain.
Sounded like an aeroplane,
But I knew she was a jewel in disguise.

She had a 455 Rocket,
The biggest block alive.
I couldn't hardly wait just to take my turn.
She was made for the straight-a-ways,
She grew up hatin' Chevrolets.
She's a Rocket,
She was made to burn.

Well, whose junk pile piece of Chevelle is this?
Did you boys come here to race or just kiss?
Hmmm, now don't you wanna know,
What I got underneath my hood?
I know, she might sound like she's missing,
But, buddy, she can teach you a lesson,
In just a quarter mile and I'll smoke you good.

In my 455 Rocket.
The kind the police drive.
I couldn't hardly wait just to take my turn.
She was made for the straight-a-ways.
She grew up hating Chevrolets,
She's a Rocket.
An' she was made to burn.

Instrumental Break.

I'm tellin you and I ain't ashamed,
I cried when that wrecker came.
As we skid, I thought I heard the angels sing.
Sounded like the Beach Boys.
We hit the curb then began to sail.
Took out most of the safety rail.
Even the cop asked me,
"Man, what'd you have in that thing?"

I had a 455 Rocket,
The very kind you drive.
You wanna watch yourself when you take that turn.
She was made for the straight-a-ways,
She grew up hatin' Chevrolets.
She's a Rocket.
She was made to burn, burn.

'Cos, she's a Rocket.
She was made to burn.
