How much do they weigh???

Since last fall's hub swap and brake upgrade, the hunt was on for a pair of drag wheels for the Lincoln. The thoughts of running the huge FR500s with drag radials wasn't quite so appealing given the weight...

58.5 lbs!

This is what I used to run...

They weighed 29 lbs with the cord showing. LOL :D

I scored a set of 15" Weld Draglites and test fitted them before laying down the cash. I ordered a set of Hoosier 27x10.50-15 Quick Time Pro DOT drag tires and had them mounted. They weighed in at...

34.5 lbs. Not quite as lite as the previous combo. The 27" tire is a only a pound heavier than the 26", so I guess the "draglites" aren't as light as the name implies.

With a little grinding , they cleared the rear Cobra brake setup.

So for now at least, we're ready to rumble (when the track opens)! :)

Cant wait to see what you can do with all the bugs worked out! Good luck this year breaking into the 12s!! not that you need any ;)

First thing I'll have to do is get rid of those boat anchors on the front! LOL

I think we might be a bit of tuning from 12s yet. ;)

JP,

Double-check to make sure that your E-brake cables aren't rubbing the rim. Mine are very close on both cars with the Cobra brake relocation brackets and 17x9" M-179 rims. This picture is with the brake off. When it's on, the cable contacts the rim.

Dang JP...you lost .0010's of a HP going with the Draglites, lol! Get some spares for the front and you're set. :p

Whats with the big color different on your tire Doug? Black/white

OOOOO that makes sense. I thought you shined them but didn't move the car forward or something, hah.

Man those drag radials are LIGHT 50-60lb wheel tire combo is very common these days.

They're not drag radials. Drag radials will weigh 28-34 lbs and the 27x10.50-15 Hoosier tire weighs 19 lbs (the 26x9.50-16 weighs 18 lbs). I looked in my records and I found where I had weighed a new 26" Hoosier tire on a snowflake rim and recorded 35 lbs.

So if you do the math,

  • The 16x7 snowflakes weigh 35-18=17 lbs.
  • The 15x9 Weld Racing DragLites weigh 34.5-19=15.5 lbs.

With the difference between the new and old weights - that means I managed to burn 6 pounds of rubber off the 26" tires before I retired them!

Thanks Doug for the heads up on the e-brake cable. I'll have to remember to check them closely again with the drag tires mounted at the track. When I test fitted them before I bought them, the e-brake cable cleared but the tire was a different size.

I bought new open-style shank type lugnuts from Summit to replace the closed-style I got with the wheels so I don't have to worry about tech giving me a hard time when they 'spot' the race wheels. ;)

So 15" wheels cleared the relocated calipers for the cobra rotors? Any chance you could snap a pic to show how much and where you ground? I am in the middle of doing the hub swap. I can't find any 16" wheel/drag tires I like.

I can't find any 16" wheel/drag tires I like.

You won't find any. And your tire choice is limited with 16" wheels.

Yes the 15" Weld DragLites clear the relocated stock caliper for the Cobra rotors. I basically rounded off the outside edge of the caliper to maybe 1/4" radius where it was almost square with no radius to speak of. The wheels would fit and clear the calipers with simple 1/2" flat washers over the studs to give you an idea of how much clearance was needed - not much. Everything else clears fine, including the caliper bracket.

I didn't think of taking pics of the calipers. Maybe when I pull the wheels at the track I'll snap a pic.

So how much does one of those FR500 rims weigh in at?

:::badsax is thinking:::

The tire/wheel combo tipped the scales at 58.5 pounds. That size tire is listed at 29-30 pounds, so the wheel would be 28.5-29.5 lbs. It should be 8-10 lbs heavier than stock.

FYI, the Chrome Y2K Cobra R wheels 18" x 9" with 275/40 Hankook Ventus tires weighs 57.6 pounds. With 245/45 tires, it weighs 56.2 pounds

So, is that a lot?

Would most after market 18" wheels be that heavy?

:D -J

I would say most wheels that size would be similar.

But yah, that's a lot compared to any of the stock 16 inch wheels/tires. Most 16" combos will weight around 50 lbs, so that would be about 17% more.

Max is right, a lot of newer cars are pushing 60 pounds at the wheel. I need to weight the rollers on the Navigator! LOL :D
