question is this. how tall a tire do i need for best 1/4 mi. performance. 373 gears vortec sc. my optins are 285/40/18 27 in.--305/40/18 27.7 in--305/45/18 28.8 in. i,m trying to keep rpms at 5800 to 6000. thanks mike

Tire size -- trap speed at 5800 to 6000 rpms

285/40/18 27 in.-- 125 to 129 mph
305/40/18 27.7 in-- 128 to 133 mph
305/45/18 28.8 in.-- 133 to 138 mph

thanks driller, i havn't been on a strip for 30 yrs plus. so.with 373 gears if i use 285/40/18s; have enough power, don't spin i could possible finish 125 to 129 at 5800 to 6000 rpm. i would think that would be mid 11s et. you think? now the dumb question 3rd or 4th gear? to date the hardest i've pushed is 2nd to third shift at 5750,guess i'm gettin old.triple digits on the street kinda make me nervous.

The mph/rpms are for 3rd gear.

The key phrase is "have enough power". ;)

Then if you have the power, the next key is traction. :)

Not trying to be elusive but I only know sometimes the math is there but the car is not. Schultz and Burbank are two that I know that are more qualified to answer if mid 11s would be feasible.

A built trans is fully capable of shifting at 6500.

The stock tach is very optimistic.

I bet that you'll find that you're leaving quite a few RPM's on the table.

My commanded 1/2 shift points of 6100/6200 result in actual shifts ~ 6400 RPM (which look like almost 7000 on the tach).

power not a problem. keeping motor to gether is. right now with 6 1/2 lbs boost i,m putting 438 hp to the wheels at 5750 rpms with 398 torque. i'm getting ready to go to a 8.5 pulley to increase low end power. if i can get the power and torque at 5800 to 6000 rpms its bound to be easier on the motor. i hope nitto to5s 285/40/18 gives me the traction. fact is i could pobably do well over 500 rwhp with this setup but since engine has original stock crank, rods, pistons etc if it survived the dyno i doubt i'd get many passes. it's a 14,000 mi. original motor i don't want to smoke it running high rpms. thats the plan anyhow. all past and future advice is greatly appreciated. not looking likely now but maybe i can make carlisle this year would be good place for 1st ever drag strip. thanks all mike

Drag radial version or street version?

Most gear heads around me opt for the triple nickel Nittos but I honestly don't find them that impressive. I can't imagine them with 400+ RWHP.

Nitto DR's aren't even any good with 300 RWHP!

Mickey Thompson makes several 18" DR's:

Part # 3782RP
Size 265/40R18
Size Equivalent Appx. 27X10.50R18
Weight 28
Compound R2
Approved Rims 9.0-10.0
Measuring Rim 9.5
Sidewall Width 10.6
Tread Width 9.6
Overall Diameter 26.5
Circ 83

I tried the MTs also and burned through them in short order. But they were better IMHO than the Nitto DRs.

5750 shift point was set while on dyno,i was wanting rwhp under 450. 438 at 5750 is what we ended up with using 6.5 lb pulley. when i switch to a 8.5 pulley it will make more hp than the engine can stand over 6000 rpm. i.m not trying to make all the hp possible so much as making all the hp the motor will take and survive a few years. if i could afford new crank, rods, pistons i would make a monster. since i can't i,m being conservative on rpms. like i said it has 14,000 original miles no point in overdoing.

All I can say is the 255/45R18 Nitto 555s I have now do not have traction on my car and it is nowhere near that HP level. I had it at the local "Flashlight Drags" and was spinning all through 1st and well into 2nd at launch.

guess i'll let u all know how it turns out. i read a number of mustang forums claiming 400 to 550 rwhp hooking up fine wirh 15lbs and a good burnout. with 5 and 6 spds. nitto is backordered on the nto5r drag radials right now. i.m going to install the 8.5 pulley, redyno and turn it loose a time or two,if not on the strip on the street to find out. guess i'm not ganna make carlisle this year i was looking forward to ist time on strip there. oh well it still might not see a drag strip til next year.
