I am looking at getting a cold air intake and i am wondering if i shoulg get a maf at the same time. What company's offer a cold air intake? If i were to get a maf and chip with the cold air what kind of gains would i get?

RE: Cold air and chip

Your stock MAF is fine for a stock to lightly modded car. There is no reason to replace it with some gimmick. Chip on the other hand, along with either relocation of the filter element into the fender well area or a custom heat shiled is definitely a good idea. Speaking optimistically you might gain around 10rwhp from that. But chip does a lot more than just the power gain.

Many have good results (more visual than anything else ... LOL) with a 90 deg elbow and K&N filter above the compressor. You can try to use a kit made for a mustang, and just clock it so that the inlet points down instead of towards the fender. Something of this nature :

It will require some custom work, but it's rather easy

Here's what I used to have on my car before the sc.

I believe that's what I have now? ;)

Basically a Pro-M MAF, PVC plumbing and K&N filter matched by tuning. I have been considering a dynotune or SCT chip to work along with the MAF which comes with a flow sheet. You will need to lower the air suspension compressor to make room in the fenderwell for the air filter.

FWIW, I have not had many runs at the track to suggest any gains/losses yet, but IMHO it is a good combo.

You can check it out by clicking the forum sponsor banner at the top of the page. I have recorded a 15 degree reduction in air temps with the above setup but I have not yet quantified the difference with the setup I currently run. I suspect the intake air to be very close to ambient. The last I recorded temperatures at the track I forgot to bring along my infrared temperature gun, an indispensible tool for troubleshooting and general use.

RE: Cold air and chip

You shouldn't need to lower the compressor if you use the mushroom type filter, like the one in the first pic.

Got a source for that filter?

RE: Cold air and chip

Does the icebox kit come with a filter? If not whaere does one locate the filter? Are there any modifcations that need to be done to the stock maf to fit in the ice box

RE: Cold air and chip

The LMS IceBox is a stand-alone accessory available separately and meant to complement the LMS 900 CFM Mass Air kit which includes the filter. To the best of my knowledge, the stock MAF will not work with the IceBox.

Adaptors are available to adapt the stock MAF to a cone filter. Do a search of the board here and you'll find examples.

RE: Cold air and chip

JP, that filter is a regular mushroom K&N, sorry I don't have a part number. They usually come with these mustang kits, but I'm sure you can find it in any performance shop K&N catalog.
