RE: 1993 Nordic Blue/Aquamarine

JP...what can I say...I am extremely jealous...of that grill!
That's what I wanted to achieve...but I gave up...you saw it through, and it looks HOT.

The Blue Flame is HOT HOT HOT!!!

amazing ride pal...from beginning until present...that is one ressurected Gen 1!

Lincoln would have been so proud. I highly doubt they would have imagined people taking the Mark VIII, and creating such a fine "machine" out of their Luxury Coupe.

The car looks better everytime I see it. Whatcha wrenching on now ?

When I can find the time, I have this stuff sitting in the garage...

  • Bilstein rear shocks w/ new improved mounts
  • Poly bushings for rear control arms
  • Sway bar links w/ poly bushings
  • Cobra radiator
  • New spyder valve

Of course there's more, but I have a few current issues with the car I need to attend to.

I still need to look at the ASHAM8 module and figure out where the problem with it is.

I've got some kind of tensioner/belt issues I need to work through. My last 'fix' was a slightly longer belt to position the tensioner in a different place. So far so good but I'm not certain it's a permanent fix.

I need to replace the relay socket for the water pump. While on the Hot Rod Power Tour, one of the relay wire connections became loose and overheated. I had to amputate that connection from the socket and rig up a spade connector to the relay. I think I'll rewire it along and the cooling fan over-ride to make it more user friendly and have a couple LED indicators in the passenger compartment.

I need to look into the shifter interlock. After the ignition switch fiasco, more often than not the shifter needs a good nudge forward in the park position to be able to release the key.

All that and I've not even mentioned the '96 yet.

These things are very STIFF! If you intend to improve handling, they'd be a good idea, but as far as weight transfer and comfortability(prob not a big deal to you) they might not be a good idea. I'm not happy with the ride of my car now, but its SUPER low so I know that has a big factor.

I just picked up a set of these, should go well with the full rear build up I got, but if I get those koni's I switch over to them instead.

I know from watching video of my car that it 'squats' at the launch and according to the experts, that is the exact opposite of a preferred reaction for best launches at the track. I believe my sixty foot times can be improved with stiffer shocks in the rear for better weight transfer. I'm not sure of the rebound effect from the Bilstein shocks however. And if I get the ASHAM8 module working, I'm confident I can find a 'sweet spot' in the air suspension for the best sixty foot times.

With every tenth at the sixty foot being 1.5-2.0 tenths in the ET, I'll sacrifice some comfort for better launches at the track. ;)

From what I've read in HotRod magazines(I know....Serge :D), I thought you want the weight transfer to the back so you don't get wheel spin. Obviously you can have too much, but if it doesn't squat, you're gonna lose a bit. Right?

JP, Your Mark is looking better than ever! Can't wait to see it again at Jeremi's, and SSHS7 to see all your new mods :)

Thanks Mr. Boost King. I can't wait to see yours as well. ;)

...I thought you want the weight transfer to the back so you don't get wheel spin. Obviously you can have too much, but if it doesn't squat, you're gonna lose a bit. Right?

This is one of the best descriptions in layman terms I've read on proper car reaction during launch(emphasis added)...

"This should be the sequence of events seen on the video. Right at launch the front should start to come up before any forward movement or the car.

The rear of the car with this added weight transferred from the rising front will lift very little but it should not go down (squat). An inch or two is normal and can be best seen by looking at the relationship between the top of the slicks and the rear fender lip.

This one or two inches of rise will indicate that the rear of the car is lifting and pushing harder on the tires while the front weight is being transferred (for every motion there is an equal and opposite motion).

If the front of the car does not rise first then the front shocks are too stiff or the rear shocks are not stiff enough.

If the rear of the car squats right away then the rear shocks are too loose.

I have found through slow motion video tape that if the rear shocks are too loose the rear tire actually bounces on the initial hit and will break loose almost right away. I stood next to the car pointing the camera right at the rear tire. It was amazing to watch. I kept on tightening the rear shocks until it stopped which was just below mid point of the adjustment. From all that I have seen the rear shocks should never be adjusted less that half way because of rear squat and tire bounce."

Your car looks great as always JP.

It looks a lot better in person though, the photos don't show those blue lug nuts very well.:)

Coming from you Bill, one who keeps his pair of aging Gen1s in impeccable condition, that's really appreciated. ;)

Thanks John, but I'm afraid my red Mark is getting back at me for driving it in the winters. I'm currently patching up the rockers and one of the doors that have some horrible rust through.

I'll post some before and after pics when I'm done. It won't be perfect, but hopefully it will be OK for you to see at the Michigan meet.

JP, congrats on having the baddest NA Mark VIII that is out there... I know technically Lonnie's is quicker but he never posts anything about his ride and you out MPH him anyway!
