Suspension slams over 60MPH

Ok...My '95 Mark front suspension slams over 60 mph and won't go back to normal height unless I stop, shut off the ignition and restart the car and let the bags re-inflate. This just started..I have had an airleak in the front for some time but it never has been a problem while driving. Any ideas? Thanks.

RE: Suspension slams over 60MPH

I suspect drug use. Have you talked to your Mark about it? Look out for the signs, because the sooner you spot the habbit, the easier the recovery.

RE: Suspension slams over 60MPH

absolutely, I would suspect the EVO sensor because that is what controls the over 60 height adjustement. Another possibility depends upon how old your compressor is and your front height sensors.
The Mark ARC (Automatic Rode Copntrol) system has basically three positions.
1. Start-up-Open and shut either door and trun on the key sends a impulse to the control module to start upo the system to the Parked position.
2. Over 15mph-EVO sends signal to Control mudule to come up 3/4" higher.
3. Over 60mPH-EVO sends signal to module to come back down to parking height.
It sounds to me like the vent position is sticking at the over 60 MPH position.
Another thing that could do it is a crusty vent solenoid on the compressor but I don't think that is as likely as the EVO> Rember, three devices must go to the vent poition in order for the front air bags to come down. Two air bag solenoids and the compressor vent soplenoid. Are you getting a message board error?

RE: Suspension slams over 60MPH

the board sez "check air suspension"...I kinda figured it was related to some kind of over 60 mph sensor...I'll check with my former cohort at the local Lincoln store for parts info...Thanks for your help..

RE: Suspension slams over 60MPH

I visited my local dealer and my friend in the parts dept. showed me the parts breakdown on his computer screen...two valves (one on each front bag) and an electronic control module...is it the elc that is giving me the problem? There isn't any mention of an "EVO" in the parts breakdown.

RE: Suspension slams over 60MPH

EVO = Electronically Variable Orifice.

The "EVO Actuator" shown in that diagram is a controlled restictor to the rack to increase steering assist at low speeds and reduce assist at highway speeds for improved road feel.
Yes, it is controlled by the same module as the suspension, thus the listing shown as "Air Suspension/EVO Steering module". No, it has no bearing upon ride height.

I'm pretty sure you'll find that one or both of your front bags are leaking.

Look over a lot of the older suspension threads in this forum and you'll see a common factor occurring again and again. Suspension bags or struts can leak intermittantly and often need VERY specific positions to leak badly. It's likely that, when your suspension attempts a speed lower, it exposes a crack at the bag's "Fold Over" point.

Does the suspension drop when parked? Address that issue first.

RE: Suspension slams over 60MPH

I guess what I was referring to as the EVO is actually the vehicle speed sensor (over 60 mph)> Ihope it's just the airbags (But personally I don't think so)> Remeber, The bags DROP at the 60 mph and would therefore cover ther potential rotted out area decreasing the chance of a leak. However, nothing is impossible. Anyway, I hope I was able to give you some better advice than "Your car is on Drugs".

Lastly, because your bags do reinflate (and supposidly stay up without viagra)I don't think it's necessarily your air bags. I would suspect the issue of the compressor not starting. Again, it depends on how old your compressor is. I personally had a similar situation in which the whole cause was in the evo linkage to the speed sensorshown in the abovree diagram (corrosion is a wonderful thing on a 5vdc system)> I would also take apart and thoroughly clean the solid state relay connection on your air compressor frame accxessible fron the front of the passernger side wheel well.Especially checkl the mechanical tightness of the stab connectors to ensure a tight fit on the solid state relay. If none of this items fix it, bring it to someone with a Superstar II tester (if 93-95) or someone with a OBD-II 96 and above. Good Luck.

RE: Suspension slams over 60MPH

This is an easy one to diagnose.

Park the car, turn it off, shut the doors. Wait for the car to drop the 1" that it does. Now turn off the air ride switch and take it for a ride. If the car drops going down the road it is the front bags leaking. If not, you have a very wierd gremlin.

RE: Suspension slams over 60MPH

It's been awhile since I've been on this site..thanks to all who have chimed in on fixes for my suspension "slam" problem.
last nite I replace the rear shocks which were worn-out..today I'm going to spend a little time trying to find the source of the front-end leaking down and the "slam" problem. I'll let you guys know if I find anything...don't have a ton of spare time this weekend but I'll take a look anyhooo..Thanks again. Rick

RE: Suspension slams over 60MPH

I found a leaky l/f airbag on my Mark...the right seems to be ok...I guess I'll order a pair of front struts and go from there..

RE: Suspension slams over 60MPH

Here's an update on my "slamming" problem. I installed new Arnott front struts...the front bags still deflate at rest (about 1/2 hour)...I don't know about the 'slamming" at speed since I haven't had it on the highway...I drove the car, shut it off, let it sit for a minute or so...shut off the compressor switch..the right front lost all air in a few minutes...the left side did settle but not as much...I'm thinking I may have a leaky o-ring on the r/f...I checked for bubbles but found none...I think I'll do a little more detective work...

RE: Suspension slams over 60MPH

Did you use the new orings that come with the arnott bags? If not that will cause a leak. They come with orings that are just that much bigger in the design...
