FR500 Steering Wheel Installed

I've got the FR500 steering wheel (M-3601-B) in both of my other cars, and was determined to install it in my LSC.

A simple bolt-in in the Cobra, and with some Mustang parts (cruise switches, back cover), in my SC.

Not so simple in the LSC.

The Mark VIII steering shaft is splined, the Mustangs use two flat spots.

So, what did I have to do?

1. File two flats on the steering shaft.
2. Use a 98 LSC Air Bag, cruise switches, steering wheel shrouds, and back cover.
3. Modify the back cover to fit the steering wheel by removing a couple of plastic mounts in the back.
4. Use Mustang horn switches and horn switch bolts.

But, it's in, and I can't wait to take a spin. :big-grin:

The first pic is stock, the other two are of the FR500 steering wheel installed.

Nice, not that many mods out there that bolt right on the Mark VIII, not much of an affer market for them.

I agree. A little determination and some time...

This is k9t8m's Mark VIII with a Gen 2 steering wheel.
He would know know to make it work.

I've never seen the steering shaft of a Gen 1, or the wiring under the airbag, so I can't answer the question, sorry. :(

Yes it works. I did mine along time ago when i did the black and ivory interior on the Blue Mark VIII. The Gen 1s have flat / rounded shafts. The 1993 is very specific in the old school blinker setups and clocks springs different hookups, but the 95s and 96s are identical internally. Im doing another one now. Ill post pics when i get home. Yes it works. But you have to do a little modding. I had mine installed way back when they first came out from Ford Motorsprts catalog.

This is the New and old style controlls connectors. The White one is the new style 95, 96 and up, and the grey one is the old 93-94 style for the clockspring. The Airbag two pin connectors stayed the same in all of them ive had apart. The next pic shows the two flatsides and rounded ends of the 1st gen steering wheels. You can see on the last pic of black FR500 steering wheel a Mark VIII rear plastic cover is layed on it. It doesnt line up becasue the Mustang sits offset. Also the top two corners where your thumbs will go will be missing some plastic to cover the hole if you were to use this one. Get a rear cover for the Mustang steering wheel to use and all is good. I can find the link to my very old post when i did the interior two tone back in the day, but i have way better pics to share in that one on here somewhere. The thread is called project resurface or something. I cant remember. But yes hes right, it can fit, just takes some modding and patience to make it right. Its definately not a bolt on. Have to make it fit depending on what you have as the year of Mark VIIII.
