Tire advice

So the other day it was raining and I almost lost it getting on the interstate(I know it's terrible but I've I am running low on funds or I would never have let them go this long). And that means I need new tires, especially when you consider that my rear ties actually have more tread than the front. (I know it's terrible but I've I am running low on funds or I would never have let them go this long)

Anyways would like some advice on what tires are good for the Marks. Right now there are Michelin's on it and I like them, the most important thing to me is, well price, but after that, NOISE. My girlfriend just got some Firehawk GT's on her Focus and they scream at anything over 45 mph so I certainly won't be getting those.

I think my best option is this http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/findTireDetail.do?c=2&rcz=32712&ar=60&rf=true&rd=16&rc=FLOINT&cs=225&dVeh=dVeh&tc=FALPT1&yr=1998&pc=18184&cf=false&vid=001150&sw=false
Anyone have experience with these?

Thanks a lot.

I am sure everyone has a different favorite but, I was very satisfied with my Pierlli P400's. And they are pretty cheap at tirerack.

No experience with them. However, I'm guessing if funds are an issue, negotiate with the tire places which are local to you. There are some around here that match prices you can find online and then don't have to pay for shipping. And considering the economy, perhaps you can get a good deal on some tires at a local shop.

Also remember to get the V or better speed rating.

If you are really low on funds, you can get a decent used tire for as low as $25.

Makes sense logres, don't think i'll be able to afford a V but I'll try to get as high as I can.

Also, While I have delt with the used tire places around here, I really would'nt want to do it with this car, most of the tires they have are really old.

Oh yeah! I forgot, I got the kid his winter tires on Craigslist. You have people upgrading rims, so they may have good tires to sell. Then again in FL, not sure, as this guy had the spare set of winter tires for rims he no longer had.

Yes I did look on craigslist, but there was only one guy selling tires http://orlando.craigslist.org/pts/1292767929.html and they come with wheels. I didn't really like them though.

In conclusion I endend up with these http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/findTireDetail.do?c=2&rcz=32712&ar=60&rf=true&rd=16&rc=FLOINT&cs=225&dVeh=dVeh&tc=FALPT1&yr=1998&pc=18184&cf=false&vid=001150&sw=false They are noticeably quieter than the Michelin's, dry traction seems good, haven't had a go with them in the rain yet though.
Thanks for all your help.

Falken's are a decent tire at an economical price.

Yes I concur.

Well it rained tonight and I got to test them out. Obviously they did better than the old ones, but I was pretty impressed at how hard it was to get the TC to kick in.

Only drawback I've noticed so far is that they are just a bit stiffer on speed bumps and the like, but of course they then don't roll over so much either, which I prefer.

Here's a better tire for a lower price:

I'll throw my $.02 in case anyone is looking for tires.
Checkout http://www.treadepot.com They have great prices on tires and I have used their prices to get my local Discount Tires to price match them. I think I saved about $20 a tire.
My experience with my current tires, General Exclaim UHP, is that they are good in the dry and average in the wet. They are a summer only tire, but I think I could have done better.

I like the funky looking tread pattern on the Falken tires you purchased, and it seems they get good reviews overall. Let us know how the treadwear is after a few months! I noticed that was an issue in some of the reviews.

Tread wear = suck, I have just over 20k miles on them and they alignment shop says I need four new ones. Of course I checked my self and indeed, they are below 3/32 or /16 in quite a few places.

So looks like I will be getting new tires soon. Someone mentioned earlier that the higher speed rating would be a quieter tire, however the salesmen tell me once you get into the z ratings, most of them are directional witch are louder than non-directional tires (Which I have trouble understanding). Seems that if you sacrifice the tire rolling both ways, it would gain quite a bit in other departments.

Also, what is the deal with Low Rolling Resistance tires? I understand the concept but are they just now trying to improve gas milleage with tires? I didn't see any of these last time I shopped around.

Thanks again!

I have always been a fan of the BFG/Michelin/Uniroyal family of tires. I have tried Bridgestone and Goodyears and they have never impressed me. Owned 5 sets of BFG/Michelin/Uniroyal and loved each one. In fact, we bought a set of Michelin Harmony's for the Town Car. They have over 40k on them and still look like brand new tires. All of them have lasted as long as they were rated too, if not longer.

I have always loved BFGoodrich as well, unfortunately they were out of my price range when I got the Falken’s a mere 20,000 miles ago. The tires themselves have very good grip in the dry, have not been able to try out wet yet. Oddly though, they seem a bit louder than the Falken in the below ~45mph range but on the interstate they are actually a bit quitter. Of course, they should also last more than 20k. At least I got a good credit from the prorating.
