Hello All,
My car came with a broken Gear Shifter Slide Cover. I know that it is not a big thing, but it is annoying.
As you likely know, this is like many other parts for our cars, an item of Un-obtain-um.
So, I decided to look around as see if I could make one. Here is my attempt.
Thank you to J for the “Blend Door Actuator Removal and Repair (Write-Up).” http://www.lincolnsofdistinction.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?33692-Blend-Door-Actuator-Removal-and-Repair-(Write-Up) I used these instructions to remove the panel, bezel and shifter knob.
I made my Gear Shifter Slide Cover from a spare piece of plastic wall board (4 ft. x 8 ft. White .090 FRP Wall Board) http://www.homedepot.com/p/4-ft-x-8-ft-White-090-FRP-Wall-Board-MFTF12IXA480009600/100389836 I have plenty left over. Let me know if you need any.

- Use a screw driver to gently remove the rear defroster control panel. Unplug the panel and set it aside.
- Unscrew the two screws holding the Radio Trim Bezel
- Remove the bezel by pulling it up from the top back towards the shifter.
- disconnect the ground clip and set the bezel aside.
- Put the car in Reverse or Neutral
- Lower the black sleeve to expose the screws: push the shifter button and pry the sleeve down
- Remove the shifter knob screws.
- Keep your thumb on the shifter button and gentry remove the knob.
- Gently remove the glide cover.
- Take out your broken Gear Shifter Slide Cover to use as a template.
- Using the old Gear Shifter Slide Cover as a template cut out the replacement out of the plastic wall board. Be careful to center the hole carefully. Even though the original hole (about 1 1/8 inches) is circular the, the black sleeve is a bit oval. Make sure to test fit your new slide cover.
- Paint (spray paint) the new slide cover and allow it to dry fully. I painted mine first, but had to repaint it after cutting out the hole.
- When reassembling, make sure your o/d connection is correct and that the black sleeve moves easily.
- put everything back in reverse order
