Cylinder 1 issue

I'm a newbie and on Friday posted in the general forum about whether I should keep, sell or junk my excellent '95 Mark VIII LSC.
The question is my cylinder 1 has no compression and engine ran like crap after I floored it during a freeway on-ramp situation. Ran smooth and wonderful up until that time and then it the engine ran horribly, so I brought it to the mechanic who checked things out and did the compression test. He said no compression on cylinder 1 it may be about this burned. Wanted $3k repair 'top of engine'. Only 102,000 miles on this well-kept car/ engine. What could have gone wrong? I thought these engines go to in 300000 miles with no trouble? I love this car and had hoped to retire with it. Is it toast? (Thank you to the 3 members who responded to the general post) What would you do if this for your car?
