Poll: Who had a job last week but not this week

So, your not a total anarchist ALL of the time? :D

Well, I'd like to think that my "professional" time and my personal time, are really quite different... (there really not all that different)... :D

Right now I'm considered more of a big walking distraction... :D
Cause I've been trying to keep a "low profile"... :D :D :D

The time frame would have fit me, I was let go from my Ford dealership internet job on September 29th after 1 year and 1 week. I was colelcting unemployment but then I got a letter before New Year's saying that the dealership reported I was terminated/fired instead of laid-off and I had to explain what happened. The letter states that if in their investigation I am found to be hiding info or misleading them then I have to pay FOUR TIMES the amount of money I was given during October to December 31 2009. I'm screwed if that happens since my only income was unemployment. I have a modest PayPal balance due to my hoodliner business but nothing close to 4x a penalty amount.

Funny thing is during the meeting when I was let go being "fired" was never mentioned.

I'm always looking for a job, but nothing is on the horizon.......

They may have said you were terminated/fired so they did not have to pay into your UI. Sounds like you may have a fight on your hands, good luck.

+1

fight them... the dealership would IMO have to prove some sort of cause for claiming you were fired...

good luck!

I don't know MI laws, but here I was fired for cause with written warnings I had signed and everything and stilll collected unemployment. Actually the unemployment people seem to be more on the claimant's side nowadays. Definitely fight it.

I've gotten unemployment 3 or 4 times, so I've got experience. (Quality engineers are ALWAYS the first to go at any trouble)

Pretty much everything the folks have said here is true. Here are some other tips for you:

1. Laid off or fired frivolously, always file for unemployment. Don't listen to the 'friendly' advice of your now-former employers. 4 employers fought me on it, and I won 3 times. One for being too knowledgable, one because a coworker didn't like me, and one because the CEO didn't like the way I looked at her. The agency people who call you are easily convinced if you were in fact fired frivolously. The one I lost was my fault - I filed, the employer appealed, we went before a judge, and I called my former boss as a witness, thinking he would back me. I didn't know that he was demoted and threatened termination if he didn't testify to a false statement written by the company's VP of operations. Totally blind-sided.

2. If you lose a filing or appeal, they will ask for the money back, like they did for me. However, you can file a hardship application and not pay back a dime - like me. We had zero income, no assets, and a load of credit debt. We got no hassles from them on it.

3. If you last long enough in a job to get a performance evaluation, keep a copy at your house. I've been fired without any warning and escorted out of the building, so I'm glad I already had what I needed to win unemployment. Good performance evaluations (signed by your boss are the best) are almost impossible for an employer to beat. They just end up looking stupid. In fact, I use my evaluations from all of my previous employers in job interviews...they love those, and I've ALWAYS ended up getting the job when I do that. They are basically gold-plated references.

On a sidenote, I think it's really sad that I'm an expert on this, but if I can help one person with this info, it will be worth it.

I've seen both sides on this issue.

A lot depends upon the state laws and even who the ALJ may be. Here in WV, the company I work for feels very lucky to win any unemployment cases from former employees. The deck is definitely stacked in favor of the former employee. We have a higher than average turnover rate and with hundreds of employees, there always seems to be an unemployment case in contention.

Personally, my most memorable unemployment experience was interviewing for a job at the local unemployment office many years ago. It was for a security position and at the time, I was an unemployed construction worker. According to my calculations, I was a shoe-in for the job. It did not pay as much as my former employment, but definitely more than unemployment. At the end of the rather lengthy interview, I was told I was 'over-qualified'! I was stunned, of course I was over-qualified - but I still needed a job and I felt my 'qualifications' were above other applicants which should have landed me the position. I guess that's not how it works.

Same thing happened to me. When I worked on bikes they said exactly this to me: "We're going to have to let you go..." Now that's not exactly laid off, and not fired. I was denied UI and they sent me a form to fill out getting my side of the story. So I told them just that, and 3 weeks later the funds started... oh and I got money for all 3 weeks. So it was a nice chunk of change =)

I've actually had a good turn of events on the job front this week.

I was hired directly by a company - as a temp - to fill in for a lady on maternity leave. I started 8/31, and she returned 1/20. On 1/21, I found out that I get to stay until July for sure. The company is constantly growing, and it's possible I may get to stay on in this department as a full hire . . . just have to see how it goes. Also, they are constantly posting job bids in other departments.

It's a complete turn-around from the last place I worked for so long. I feel like everything I lost has been given back to me :)

Congrats Rene I hope it continues to be great for you. Now If I could only find something part time in the mornings my life would be great too. But I am so happy for you cheers! I raise my beer in congrats!

Thanks, everyone! It sure feels good :)

Good luck to anyone still searching - nice places to work do still exist!!

i also got a new job...kinda, im now a self employed hotel builder, i went to school for carpentry, and now im building brand new hotels all over texas, i have to travel alot, but, i get paid decently, however it takes alot of time away from my Mark Viii rebuild, at least ill have the money for parts now :)

well, im not unemployed again, i got fired by my boss txting me, accusing me of sleeping with his ex-girlfriend...rofl

i started working full time with crappy jobs when i was 12 years old (40hrs + a week). Around 17 i realized i could do more (and didn't want to work in restaurants forever), tried in school and am now a full time student studying aerospace engineering.

So, im currently unemployed... But im thinking about trying to get a job at the local adult store for more cash.

At least all those broken child labor laws paid for my mark and my edjumacation haha
