Not to start a painc or anything, but I'm posting this because there was someone in [a href="http://www.markviii.org/htdocs/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=20&topic_id=3828&mesg_id=3828&page="]Calvin's forum[/a] that had a fire that started with this same switch. I blew him off at the time, but there seems to be something to this.

Glitch in cruise-control system can cause fires, automaker says

Ford Motor Company — the second-largest U.S. automaker — has announced a voluntary recall of hundreds of thousands of its popular pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles due to a fire risk.

Ford is recalling the vehicles because their cruise-control switches could short circuit and start a fire under the hood while parked, the automaker said Thursday.

“This is a ticking time bomb ready to go off and something needs to be done,” Bob Garcia, owner of a Ford F-150, told NBC News. Garcia's pickup caught fire nine hours after he parked it at his home. The fire destroyed his truck and part of his home before firefighters arrived.

‘Significant’ recall

The recall involves approximately 792,000 vehicles, including F-150 pickup trucks, Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigator SUVs from the 2000 model year that are equipped with a speed-control switch. Also included in the recall are certain F-150 SuperCrew trucks that were built through August 7, 2001 and are equipped with speed control.

One Ford source tells NBC that the recall is “significant.”

According to Ford, vehicle owners have reported that the cruise control on their vehicles has malfunctioned before they shut down the engine. The mechanism that shuts off the speed control may overheat, eventually causing a fire, Ford said.

“We're getting flame literally falling on other plastic components,” said Florida mechanic Larry Perry.

Perry says even when the engine is turned off, power flows to the switch, causing it to overheat and start a fire. “All it takes is a little more heat, a little more flame, you've got a vehicle you can’t put out.”

Ford says it knows of 63 alleged vehicle fires and of one alleged injury associated with a fire. No deaths have been reported, but the instances of fires appear to be increasing, the car company said.

Ford will notify owners of the vehicle recall in February, and dealers will deactivate the cruise control switch for free. Once the company has an adequate supply of replacement switches, it will send another letter notifying owners that they can get their switches replaced.

Ford said cruise control will be disabled once the switch is deactivated.

“We recognize this may be an inconvenience, but we believe this preventive action is in the best interest of our customers’ safety,” the company said.

Bread and butter

The F-Series has been a huge seller for Ford, setting industry records. By some estimates, the F-150 makes up half of the company's pre-tax profits for auto sales. By all accounts, it's Ford's bread and butter.

The truck line retained the title of best-selling vehicle in the United States last year. The company sold 939,511 F-Series trucks, setting a new industry record for full-size pickup sales. Ford set the previous record with 911,597 in 2001.

“Ford is hoping to act quickly enough so as not to have a repeat of, say, the Ford Explorer rollover problem that is very fresh in everyone's mind,” said Frank Marcus, technical director of Motor Trend Magazine.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into the defect in November after receiving 36 reports of fires. All of the incidents occurred when the vehicle was parked and the ignition was turned off. No injuries were reported.

Ford said it worked closely with NHTSA throughout the investigation.

Mark...good post buddy. This is good stuff, and it is getting bigger...

BTW, you have a black feather stuck in your teeth! :+ :+ :+ ;-)

Thanks for posting this. I did everything I could to help the "other" member identify, and correct the problem with his car...as his many threads show.

Heard it on the radio today. We have a couple affected vehicles in our work fleet.

RE: Ford recalls 792,000 popular pickups, SUVs

This isn’t the first time this happened. I remember they re-called our 1993 Grand Marquis quit some time ago for the same exact reason ::wtf::

RE: Ford recalls 792,000 popular pickups, SUVs

xo I need my cruise control

Thinking about not taking the Gator in on the first recall.... but that might be the wrong thing to do. If they disconnect it I want to at least know when they'll repair it.

RE: Ford recalls 792,000 popular pickups, SUVs

Man am I glad I got an 01....It seems that every time I turn around the pre 01' gator guys got all kinds of problems....I wont be buing another navigator anyway. The cadi is a much better unit with more options and a better engine.

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

LOL. :7

I've heard caddy owners express their their thoughts saying the Navigator is a much better unit with more options and a better engine!

Go figure.

There is a self diagnostic check that you can perform for the speed control to see if you have a malfunction. The following instruction "highlights" are taken from my 1998 Mark VIII Ford Workshop Manual. I am posting this to help everyone understand what the "Deactivator Switch" does, and how to run the test. As mentioned, these are highlights, so, if you want to read it all, go to page 310-03-1 of the manual. As always, use this information at your own risk.

There are 5 components for the Vehicle Speed Control. They are:

1 - 9F924 - Deactivator Switch - right front wheel well

2 - 9C888 - Speed Control Actuator Switch - steering wheel

3 - 9E731 - Vehicle Speed Sensor - transmission

4 - 13480 - Brake Pedal Position (BPP) Switch - brake pedal

5 - 9C735 - Speed Control Servo - left front wheel well

This is what the manual says the function of the "defective" part mentioned in this thread - Deactivator Switch does:

The deactivator switch is a normally closed switch. The deactivator switch replaces the speed control dump valve (9C727) as a redundant safety feature in the system.

o Under normal conditions, when the brake pedal is applied, an electrical (brake on/off) signal from the stoplamp circuit to the speed control servo will disengage the system.

o Under increased brake pedal efforts, the deactivator switch will open and remove power to the speed control servo, releasing the throttle from the servo control.

The deactivator switch is located at the front RH frame rail to the rear of the air suspension compressor.

Self-Test Diagnostics

Warning: THIS TEST IS A KEY ON ENGINE OFF (KOEO) TEST ONLY THAT IS CONDUCTED IN PARK ONLY WITH EMERGENCY BRAKE FULLY ENGAGED.

o Enter Self-Test Diagnostics by depressing the speed control OFF switch while turning the ignition key ON, ensuring engine does not start and is not running. The speed control indicator lamp on the instrument panel will flash once to indicate that the speed control module entered the diagnostic mode. Five additional flashes at this point indicate a defective speed control servo. Release the OFF switch.

o NOTE: If the ON switch is not pressed within 5 seconds after entering the diagnostic mode, the module times out and the procedure must be started over.

Press the remaining switches in this sequence: ON, RESUME (RSM), COAST (CST), and SET/ACCEL.

o The speed control indicator lamp will flash as each switch is pressed. Press each switch in the sequence immediately after the light goes out for the previous switch.

When the test is completed, it will tell you the following:

After all five speed control switches have been pressed, the indicator lamp will flash to indicate a Pass or Fail:

- 1 Flash - (with dynamic throttle pull).

- 2 Flashes - BPP switch defective, circuit defective, or brake pedal applied.

- 3 Flashes - Deactivator switch is open or circuit defective.

- 4 Flashes - Vehicle speed signal is out of range or not connected.

o Immediately after the passed STATIC test, the speed control module then performs a DYNAMIC test automatically by actuating the throttle lever from 1mm to 10mm of travel from the idle position. During the DYNAMIC throttle pull, observe the throttle movement to witness any binding or sticking of the actuator cable, proper connection of the actuator cable to the throttle lever, and ensure the THROTTLE RETURNS BACK TO IDLE POSITION.

o Return ignition switch to the OFF position and proceed to the following Symptom Chart, if necessary.
