Man corvettes are weak!!!!

in body at least. We had brand new vette come into the shop today for a tire change. The last shop he took it to didnt' know the vette body's are very weak. As it turns out whenever you jack a vette, you have to open the doors and hood. Well they didn't and cracked the doors and windshield! I couldn't beleive it, it was a pretty nasty sight. I'm suprised he didn't sue, although I guess he might have I just don't know about it...

RE: Man corvettes are weak!!!!

Did you take your shoes off and setup seismic monitors? Maybe you need to invest in those?

RE: Man corvettes are weak!!!!

What a joke. Yeh, Like I really want to go 150mph in one of those things!

RE: Man corvettes are weak!!!!

UMMMMM completely NOTTTTTT TRUE... corvettes have Certain jacking points and only they can be used! if your opening your hood and doors to jack up your car your an idiot! If you used a non designated jacking point the pressure goes straight to the body panels which wont hold 3400lbs!

next time do a tad bit of research before you post such balderdash.

RE: Man corvettes are weak!!!!

I agree completely with Petey on this one. Why do you think the manufacturer points out where the jack points are?! For those exact reasons! There is no need at all to open the doors or hood to jack the car up. The bodies of the vette are composed almost entirelly of fiberglass and balsa wood. This is done to keep the weight down. The reason that vette got jacked up is because the shop/people working on it were retarded.

RE: Man corvettes are weak!!!!

My post assumed that the original poster was correct that the car was jacked in the proper places. I have not jacked-up a '03, BUT, having not owned every one, but personally driven all these Vette's since '66, (these are the one's I can remember driving: '66,'68,'72,'77,'84,'91,'93,'96,'00,'03), I can and WILL make this comment. The chassis on Vette has been their weak point since day one. Period. Can't be disputed. Let the flaming begin!

RE: Man corvettes are weak!!!!

The C5 chassis is much more rigid than most cars on the road. It was designed as a convertible chassis and then modified into coupe and hardtop form. If i had to pick one of the best chassis on the road today, the C5 would be near the top.

As a matter of fact we had a Corvette chassis design engineer at my school today talking about the 50th aniversary Vette.

We saw Dynamic FEA models and he showed us the resonant frequency simiulation. I can tell you one thing, The vette leaves most cars in the dust in terms of chassis rigidity.

I do agree however, that the C4 chassis left much to be desired.

just look at this simple chart.

RE: Man corvettes are weak!!!!

STIFFNESS (Hz = resonant freq.)
C5 convertible = 21 Hz (61.5% stiffer than C4 Conv.)
C5 Hardtop = 23.5 Hz (12% stiffer than C5 Conv)
C5 Hardtop = 80# lighter than C5 Conv.)

RE: Man corvettes are weak!!!!

OK, for 30 years the Corvette chassis sucked. In the last five years it has gotten better but they still ride like a wash board. Probably more of a symptom of the suspension than the actual frame I would gather.

BTW, Pete. Lets see, I have either driven or sold these cars for more than 25 years and you have owned 1 for 2 months. You win.

rides like a wash board

Lincoln = Lux. ride Nice soft ride
Corvette = World class SPORTS car firm, hard, stiff ride

Do you notice the diffrence between the two?

Very diffrent cars, very diffrent rides

RE: Man corvettes are weak!!!!

"Ok, for 30 years the Corvette chasis sucked."

To todays standards, yes, I agree completely. For back then I disagree with you whole heartedly. There is a HUGE difference between cars today and 30 year old vettes. Everytime I switch cars I am in awe. One of the cars always out does the others in at least one aspect.

I know its not quite the best comparison, the mark (1996), the T/A (1977), and the vette (1967). But go drive them all, and then tell me what you think. Just so you know, I do have experience with other cars as well. I have driven my friends dads Mercades SL 600 quite a bit and his Porshe Carerra on a few occasions as well. I do have a feel of different cars.

Out of all of my cars, the the Mark rides and corners the best. Unless your powersliding the T/A through a turn. Runner up to that position would be the Vette. The T/A would come in last, with the exception of sliding it.

"...they still ride like a wash board"

Compareing to todays standards yes. Back then, definetly not. Our vette, which is 10 years older than the Trans Am has a smoother and softer ride. It has slightly more play in the stearing, but I will relate that back to the skinny factory issued red wall tires. Theres no doubt in my mind that with some nice fat drag radials on the car it would handle great and there would be no play at all in the steering.

As far as finding the car to be brittle or fragile, I haven't seen it. Yes we do baby the car, its always lifted up on a jack point and we are extremlly careful around it but it has shown no sign at all of being weak.

But what do I know. I'm only 19, wasn't allowed to touch the vette till I was 17. Over those 2 years I've maybe, at the most put 150 miles on it. Both you and Petey definetly have more experience with the cars. At least one of you, not to mention any names (nysbadmk8) knows what he's talking about.

RE: Man corvettes are weak!!!!

its soo funny that you made this comment.

"The chassis on Vette has been their weak point since day one. Period. Can't be disputed. Let the flaming begin!"

Since day one the C5's chassis has been its strongest point )

Kinda like the difference between a young hardbody girl and a middle aged slightly chubby woman

RE: Man corvettes are weak!!!!

Well, Pete, once again my post gets deleted. You win.

"Since day one the C5's chassis has been its strongest point" I guess not strong enough to keep the windows from breaking and the doors from bending. Oh, look, you put the jack two inches to the left. What did you expect?

RE: Man corvettes are weak!!!!

Yes. If it so rigid, you should be pretty much able to push the lifts under and jack it up without having to do a 50,000 piece pickup because you didn't hit the needle in the haystack.

I'm just bummed we can't have a little flaming back and forth to keep things interesting. I like the C5, but definitely looking forward to the C6. Looking even farther forward to the 2005 Stang. Good Luck.
