Sony WEGA

I am looking into one of these televisions. I hear that they are the best. Anyone have any experiences with them. I am looking into getting the 36 inch model that is HDTV ready.

RE: Sony WEGA

They're nice, but expensive as hell. For the money, you can get a much bigger rear-projection TV, with a screen that's just as flat and with resolution just as good. My dad just bought a TV. It seemed to me that once you got up to a good 30" plus tube TV, with a flat screen, you could buy a 50" projection TV for the same price or less.

RE: Sony WEGA

Do you know of any good rear-projection screens, that would save me a lot of time instead or having to research them. I was looking through the crutchfield catalog and noticed they have the 36" for $1799 - are the projections in that price range?

RE: Sony WEGA

I think you can get a 50" Mitsubishi (spelling) for about what you're wanting to spend. But you may not need one that large, depending on the size of the room it's going to be in. I have a 42" Mitsubishi that I paid $1500 for in 96. Works great. My den is
17 X 24 and it fits well in that area. Consumer Reports has an on-line version that you can check also.

RE: Sony WEGA

I looked at them a while back and one thing that bothers me is that even with the HDTV, you can see the fine lines (mostly the vertical ones) between pixels on the WEGAs. I think it's called the shadow mask. Anyway, it's like looking through a screen door to me, even from several feet away. Some of the other HDTVs seem to have a smoother picture with no noticable lines. More like a computer monitor.

It's a completely subjective thing I guess. The Sony's may in fact have the best picture measurement-wise. I just couldn't stand the lines.

Yes, that is what I wanted also. I wanted a bigger than 27" set in the entertainment center as well as an upgrade in picture. That is until I stumbled upon the 43-inch Hi-Scan 1080i™ Big Screen Projection TV - model KP-43HT20.

I could not believe it was rear projection. Find one in person and compare to the large WEGA tube type - and the price. It is HDTV "ready" if that is important, but the shear impact of the picture IMHO is the selling point. Once you get up to the price range of the larger WEGAs, this size rear projection unit is very competitive. With features galore, movies are much more entertaining and you have not experienced X-Box till you play it on a digital wide screen display with surround sound.:D

I gave the entertainment center away.:)

RE: Sony WEGA

I bought a Zenith 32" HDTV Ready -- meaning no box needed. What sold me was comparing the price, duh, and picture, duh again, with the Sony and Hitachi. To me the Zenith's picture was better, and I got a $200 rebate back. Total $1100.
There is a ratio of what size TV you need based on where you sit and watch TV the most. Some formula based on the distance from where you sit to where the screen is. Formula for us was 32- to 36-inch. Ask the question. This could save you many dollars. People make the mistake of buying too big and it is like sitting in the front row of a theater. Not good.
Finally, Sports in HDTV is awesome. The superbowl and Masters were incredible. The NBA playoffs are terrific as well. Now I'm waiting to get the ESPN HD Signal here so I can get hockey.

RE: Sony WEGA

Well, the room I am using in my basement measures 22' X 12' - I am going to situate the room the long way. I was thinking about going with a 36" but there are some 55" rear-projection screens out there that are just a few bucks more. What do you think.

RE: Sony WEGA

36” isn’t big enough. Ok that’s a fairly broad statement
I have a 30” in a room 2’ shorter then yours
My brother has a 52” rear projection in a room 3’ longer then yours
Go for the bigger screen, you’ll be glad you did

RE: Sony WEGA

My room that my 43" Sony is in is about 20' x 12'. The 43" screen is not too small at the 20' distance nor too big at 12'. Side to side hands on comparison is the only way to decide. IMO, I did not see the picture quality in the 55"+ rear projection sets that the 43" Sony has. I didn't go looking for a rear projection, I was looking at 32"-36" flat screen($$$) sets when I found the 43" Sony(~$1400).

RE: Sony WEGA

In my opinion nothing out there compares with a tube TV. Sonys are the best. Period. I own a Sony Trinitron XBR 27" and it has one of the best pictures I have ever seen on a Television- that being said it's probably about 8 years old now too.

I recommend going for the 34 Inch Sony Trinitron WEGA XBR(The one I hope to upgrade to eventually for myself). The aspect ratio on these TVs is 16:9(ie rectangular rather than the classic square)- so high definition broadcasts will fit, and DVD movies can be seen in true widescreen. Remember, HDTV is broadcast in 16:9, so you will see ugly black lines on the sides of the TV...trust me, they are FAR more intrusive than the horizontal lines on letterboxed movies. There is a full screen view switch on most boxes or controls that widens the picture to full screen, however you lose some of the picture quality- the very thing you are paying for to begin with.

Also, there is a very high build tolerance with TVs. Some may vary by 15%. What I have always done is to buy a floor model, because you are assured the best picture; and you save a bunch of money to boot(IE- Two identical(same brand, model number, etc.) TVs side by side can look very different).

I had the same opinion on tube vs. rear projection. I still have the same opinion on Sonys being the best. I'm just saying you have to see it to believe it, don't take my word for it.

Now if cost were no object, I'd have one of those wide screen plasma screens. Nothing I've seen(tube type, rear projection, front projection...) even begins to compare.

RE: Sony WEGA

HDTV will also come in at 4:3 ratio if you don't have a 16:9 TV set up. We use the 4:3 ratio here. Looks great.

RE: Sony WEGA

OK, here's the deal. I just got back from Best Buy, just so you guys kow there is a promotion going, 18 months no interest but 20% after so be careful... I saw that 46" Sony Rear-Projection, absolutely fell in love with it. But the sales man came over and bursted my bubble. Tell me if this is true. Playing any video games and pausing the screen (like with Tivo) will burn an image into the screen like the old PC monitors without a screen saver. He also claimed that the only Rear-Projection screen TV's out there that correct for this type of thing are $4000 and up. But I have to admit, the WEGA (vay-guh) have such an awesome picture it is insane! He did shoe me this Samsung Rear-Projection TV that was in the $4000 range that had one awesome picture. Feedback please...

RE: Sony WEGA

Christo, FWIW I have had virtually every game console over the years with my two sons and I have never seen screen burn. I've had PC monitors for years and currently have 4 PCs and 5 TVs. I've had countless mornings where I've found a game console left on or a PC still on from the previous night. The only burnt screens I've ever seen were at the drive thru ATM.;) Now maybe if you went on vacation and forgot Atari's remake of Pong on pause...
