What would you estimate your percentage of email SPAM to be?

I hate spam.

I hate spam.

About 90% of my e-mail is now spam. I can hardly find new relevant messages now. Anti-spam programs are near useless. The governments need to step in to control this problem.

My home computer has been down for over a week now. I have not been able to receive e-mail. In a way, it is a welcome relief.

RE: I hate spam.

This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart, as I about to start an assignment as sub-contractor working on a SPAM-related project.

May I suggest that the column with the members email addresses be hidden on the LOD Members Page (http://www.lincolnmarkviii.org/LOD/members.html)

This might also encourage further use of our Private Message fascility which is SPAM-FREE in 2003. Another benefit of club membership!

RE: I hate spam.

I have several e-mail addresses, and one of them is exclusively for public use.... like registering for email lists, registering products, sites that need registration, etc. I don't give out my personal email except to people.

The former gets about 200 messages a day, of which about 90% are spam. I use filters to sort the mailing lists into folders and don't read the inbox at all. Just ignore it.

My personal mail addresses, which I don't register, get almost zero spam. I'd say one to two messages a week.

RE: I hate spam.

I get almost no spam-mail at all. I'd say 2 to 4 pieces per week. I think this is because I do not use pay pal or any similiar type of competitor. If not, then I have no clue as to why I get so little. My son gets more than I - but still very lite. My wife however gets 20 to 3o A DAY! Lottery, Romantic Hot line, Grow bigger breasts, invest in widgets, new cleaning laundry detergent, buy property on line, win a new Lexus (that's the one we'll win & I'll sell it in 24 hours), register for bowling lessons in our area.....you name it, she get it. She is ALSO registered on pay pal........

RE: I hate spam.

PayPal is not the cause of spam mail Sandy. The main causes are automated programs "bots" searching web pages for email addresses and people filling out forms and allowing the box that gives permission to receive notices and such checked.

In the first instance the best way is to show emails as a graphic with a special link that can't be read by these "bots." The second is simply never to give your email address unless the site specifically states it does not share your email.

One of the biggest offenders are these sites that tell you they are giving away stuff, once they have your email you are sunk!

Also, never check the link that says to click it if you want to be removed, more often than not this only confirms to the spamer that your address is correct and you'll just get more!

My email program (Apple's Mail.app) and othhers such as IE do have filters that you can train to weed out spam. I've got mine so fine tuned with certain key words now that I see no more than 5 spam emails a day.

Alexander, I strongly suggest that the member list be modified so that member's emails are displayed graphically rather than as text. Remember the virus a while back that all members where getting?

RE: I hate spam.

I don't mind spam nearly as much as I mind real world junk mail. I believe that the government hates competition, and spam competes against unsolicited pieces of tree that waste millions and millions of dollars in time and energy devoted to gathering and disposing of all the crap that gets mailed out every day. I would rather press delete 10 times a day (though I don't have to because almost all spam goes into my bulk mail folder) than throw away the pounds and pounds of crap that Uncle Sam insists on stuffing in my mailbox.

RE: I hate spam.

I just got my Consumers Report today and the cover story is "Stop Spam" "4 ways it finds you, 8 ways to block it and 6 mistakes to avoid"

Haven't read it yet but it kind of makes me laugh. If you've ever subscribed to Consumers Report, it's the worst magazine you can read as far as magazine "spam" goes. You know, those irritating post cards they put between pages. That's the first thing I do when I get any magazine, I tear all those suckers out and throw them in the scrap so I can flip through the pages without those things interfering with flipping.

To me that's "spam" too. I think I'll write to them and let them know what I think. :)

90% off the SPAM I receive is from the email account I use exculsively on this and the previous LOD site.

I think it would be a good idea to limit email address access to LOD members only.

I also run Spybot on a regular basis and recommend it highly.

RE: I hate spam.

I've setup a 3-tier address system on hotmail.

There's my public address davidcc2001@hotmail.com. It gets about 90% spam and aobut 10% from stuff that should use one of my other adresses - for example my ebay account is tied to it and I haven't moved it yet. I use this address when I need to provide an address but don't trust the person / site where it is going. If half of these msgs were true I would be a billionaire with a tweleve foot wiener by now.

Tier 2 is for mailing lists and semi-public usage. It is the email address taht my "forum subscription" notices go to, GameSpy daily newletter, stuff like that. It gets very little spam becasue I am somewhat more careful about who gets it. I won't type it out here becasue I don't want it harvested by email harvster bots. I get about 5 msgs / day, usually no spam, but it is possible.

Tier 3 is only given to individuals I know personally from the physical world. I have never received a spam on it yet.

I setup my mail program to read all 3 accounts and then I can just skim through the inboxes.

RE: I hate spam.

Judging by the amount of spam that makes it to my inbox, i think Hotmail needs to install a "delete new" button. I check my email a few times a day, and most, if not all, is spam. Plus i have to check the junk mail folder, because a lot of times non-junk makes it in there.
