Be prepared!

Here in Florida we face the possibility of hurricanes every year. The reality of having no electrity, food or safe drinking water should be considered. I've got about 25 gallons of potable water and caned food stored along with propane to cook with and for light. I hope I don't need it but if I do I've got it. Are you prepared?

RE: Be prepared!

Here we will just take the water, propane and food from they guy that has it :)

RE: Be prepared!

I can remember living in Key West while in the Navy. I was married, living in Key West on White Street in Navy housing. Was there for 2 hurricane seasons and went thru 2 big ones....was in 1963 and 4 I think. Had to fill bathtub with water (add a cup of Clorox) in case the water line from the mainland got severed. Building (cement block) had those horizontal slat windows....what a racket they made in a 90MPH wind!!! Saw a lot of destroyed boats! Was sure glad to see those lights come back on!!

RE: Be prepared!

luckily i happened to have some "extra" water from chicago, and that was about it. We had some canned food, and i just went down to the boat. My dad has a 38' chris craft. It has a generator and a stove, not to mention lights, so that's where i was. It just happened to have about 150 gallons of gas in it, so i wasn't worried about running out like the people with generators at home were.

RE: Be prepared!

I’ve been through many hurricanes over the years. Mostly near misses with a day or two of downed services at best. However, in 1989 Hurricane Hugo hit us with a vengeance. It took two days to cut the downed trees on the roads in our neighbor hood just to get out of the subdivision. For twenty days we were without power and closer to thirty without water. Once the water was drinkable again it had a “Pine sole” taste and smell, as there were so many downed pine trees in the reservoirs if had taken on that taste. In my yard I had had 19 trees, 15 were knocked down and 5 hit the house and punctured the roof in three places. For nearly a month we basically “camped” out in our house. I borrowed a 1600-watt generator from my father. We were able to keep the freezer going and a couple of droplights I had run throughout the house. I learned how to compute wattages on electrical devices so we could figure out how to and what we could run on the generator. The wife still had to curl her hair each morning for work so that 1500-watt curling iron/blow dryer shut everything else down for 15 minutes (LOL). We grilled out in the backyard and drank from mostly bottles and cans for the duration.

One thing we had never thought about was with no power, the banks and ATM’s could not operate. So now we keep a little cash hidden away for emergencies. Nor could they pump gasoline from under ground tanks. So now when hurricanes are closing in we insure all the vehicles are filled with gas too. There are some things you can do to beprepare but an instant disaster like a blackout would be difficult.

RE: Be prepared!

We were very prepaired!
We had candles, food, drink, cigars, wine, and condoms. :)

.......... and condoms. :)

Was that for transporting water? }> We used to carry them in our Air Force survival kits to carry water. In those situations, there's usually not awhole lot of sex going on. :(

RE: Be prepared!

We just had our second one this year in Texas. Ok, who ticked off mother nature here. I bet it was one of those dixie chicks -- again.
I remember being stationed at Homestead AFB south of Miami in the early 80s. When a hurricane threatened we had to climb our trees and knock off all the coconuts in base housing. Then we went through two more when I was stationed in Norfolk, Va. We had to tape everything up and sit in our bathrooms.

RE: Be prepared!

I have my own hurricane plan. Drive to JC's house and loot the place :)

LOL! Watch out for JC's Remington 870 & ParaOrdenance P13. If you have two beautiful women y'all can stay.

RE: Be prepared!

ive only been through one really bad hurricane and that was the one back in 1992, hurricane andrew. actually, we didnt stay for it. we decided to head up to orlando and make a vacation out of it. with all the people on the road, it literally took us 8 hours to get to orlando (normally a 3.5 to 4 hour drive from miami). we stayed in one of the last rooms not to be booked in all of orlando which happened to be a penthouse suite. when we got back, we drove right past our street cuz we didnt recognize the roads.

now we keep water and a tank of propane as well as have a stock of canned foods. it'd be neat if we could convert to hydrogen and not have to worry about power outages.

RE: Be prepared!

After Hurricane Hugo hit Charleston in 1989, most of the power lines replaced we put underground. We have very few power outages now from down poles.
