Meaning what’s the longest time period you owned your car without insuring it, weather it be expired insurance, or just got your coverage canceled and never bothered to restore it in time, or PERIOD.

This should be intresting...

RE: Whats the Longest you ever drove without insurance?

I can not remember that I have EVER driven an auto I owned without it being insured before I drove it. Risk isn't worth it.

RE: Whats the Longest you ever drove without insurance?

Never. It's against the law here, you need proof of insurance to get tags.

RE: Whats the Longest you ever drove without insurance?

I think I've done it twice, both times returning home with cars I'd bought, but I think my insurance actually covers that.

other than that, i don't. too much liability and too many other stupid drivers. Remember, if it its not your fault, you're screwed it you don't have insurance.

ZERO in a car because of the laws. But what really pisses me off is the fact that I have to have uninsured motorist insurance because of those who still drive with no insurance even though it's against the law. It's a very healthly fine around here if you're caught. Having insurance is actually much cheaper than the fine. One of my sister-in-laws got a $400 ticket two years ago because she couldn't find here insurance card during a traffic sweep for violaters. It was in her trunk in another purse. She went to court and the judge reduced the ticket to "only" $200.

RE: Whats the Longest you ever drove without insurance?

Never. In the single-mom days sometimes I would end up in the grace period before I paid my premium, but I never went uninsured.

RE: Whats the Longest you ever drove without insurance?

The MINIMUM fine here for driving with no insurance is $5000. It used to be $500, so people would take their chances, get fined $500 and say "No biggie...it cost me $500 to drive for 2 years...so I'll just keep doing it." But now, when they get nailed, $5000 MINIMUM (max. is $50,000 I think) I guarantee you they will think about doing it twice.

On another note, they are about to enact a street racing law here that is VERY strict.

First Offence 12 month driving suspension
2nd Offence Lifetime driving suspension

I think it's a great idea. I always thought goofing of on the street like that was exceptionally dangerous, and stupid. Save it for the track....

RE: Whats the Longest you ever drove without insurance?

Never.

Well, I once towed a not registered boat trailer 2 miles, does that count??? :p

Marcus.

RE: Whats the Longest you ever drove without insurance?

Yeah, its pretty bad fine over here, that’s IF your license is not suspended.

But you old folks got it made... $40bucs a month for full coverage.... hell; everyone would have full coverage then.

RE: Whats the Longest you ever drove without insurance?

I did it once, unintentionally. I moved and forgot to change the address with the insurance company. Didn't get a bill or make a payment, and got canceled. I was without insurance a month......unknown to me. Fixed it as soon as I found out.

Interesting you brought it up. A friend of mine just fell into the trap. Thought she could go without for a few months cause she was short cash........ Naturally, her 92 chevy slammed right into the ass of a brand new lexus....... about 2 weeks after her insurance lapsed. Being a waitress and student, shes in a bit of a bind. I cant help but to first feel sorry for her, but also chuckle at the irony. SHe has insurance for a number of years without any claims....as soon as she tries to skate by without, wham.

In Illinois, its a Min $500 fine...... and you have to get SR22 insurance (expensive!) but they will drop the ticket if you go to court with new insurance. BUT..... If you get in an accident without insurance, your liscense is suspended until you pay for the repairs / injuries...

RE: Whats the Longest you ever drove without insurance?

The only time i've ever driven a car without insurance is from where i bought it to where i was parking it. And technically, i was covered, because i had a policy in effect on the lincoln, which would have covered anything that happened in the uninsured vehicle. Other than that, i have driven other peoples cars that i found out later had no insurance. But again, since i have insurance, i'm covered, should i need to be.

At the moment i have 3 vehicles insured. 1 is up for sale, but i'm not going to drop the insurance until it sells. I don't want someone flipping it on a test drive and suing me.

Driving around god's waiting room without insurance is just begging for trouble.

RE: Whats the Longest you ever drove without insurance?

At least in MI it's no-fault. If you don't have insurance, and you smack your chevy into a lexus, the other drivers insurance has to cover the lexus, and you're just ##### out of a chevy. If you injure or kill someone, there are state funds that'll pick up some of your liability. I'm sure you'd still be in pretty serious trouble (you'd have a hell of a lot of trouble getting insurance too) but i don't think it would completely destroy someond financially.

Down in Detroit, there are so many people without insurance, it's unbelievable. One of the TV stations around here ran a sting on some guy down in the ghetto that was running a drive through selling fake proofs of insurance. Usually they're out there slanging rocks or something, but this guy was selling fake insurance. And business was good.

Funny you mention about getting by for a few weeks without insurance. My dad was changing jobs a number of years ago, and was without medical insurance for 2 weeks. Sure enough, he had some chest pains, and went in to get checked out. Cost like 5 grand, if i remember. Luckily it wasn't anything though.

RE: Whats the Longest you ever drove without insurance?

Like someone else mentioned, just long enough to get a new car home, but that is covered I guess. On a side note I would suggest to anyone with insurance to have at least 100/300/100 with 100,000 underinsured. This is from a personal expierence. I was in an accident in november 2001, rearended by a speeding drunk driver. I have had two back surgerys and 9 months of lost work/wages. Total medical bills are in excess of $150,000.00 lost wages over $20,000.00 and it still may not be done yet. The a$$ that hit me had $50,000.00 in coverage and I had only $25,000 underinsured. Long story short CYA, you never know what anyone else has for coverage. This accident wasn't my fault but I still get left holding the bag. Since the accident I have increased ALL of my insurance. Live and learn :)

RE: Whats the Longest you ever drove without insurance?

Good point. If your state has underinsured/uninsured mandates, it is wise to carry beyond the state minimum as the insurance company is liable only to the limits of the coverage.

RE: Whats the Longest you ever drove without insurance?

I dropped the insurance on my old '87 GT for a few months. Of course that was when its tranny was blown and I didn't have the money to fix it - so it wasn't driving anywhere. Technically illegal, but you can't get pulled over in the garage :)

I've never driven around without some insurance in effect.
