Afraid this is going to come here, too

RE: Afraid this is going to come here, too

I don't see it happening. The American public would have a fit and I would have to agree. I would however like to see disabling devices put on all car's to stop high speed pursuits in their tracks.

RE: Afraid this is going to come here, too

I sure hope you are right! Smells of old Russia. i.e. "KGB"

RE: Afraid this is going to come here, too

Like national identity cards it'll never happen, and if someone propses it the ACLU will keep it tied up in court for decades.

Where have you guys been? I was serious about OnStar. Click the little movie here:
http://www.onstar.com/us_english/js...ash_page=i_dont&title=Stolen+Vehicle+Tracking

Now tell me what keeps the authorities from requiring OnStar to track you if they wanted to.

Several rental car companies have installed GPS tracking systems and then fine customers for speeding:

There was also a story I read a while back about someone getting fined for taking a rental truck out of state when the customer had stated that he wouldn't. How did they know? A GPS black box installed in it.

And "smart" black boxes are already here:

It may not be mandatory yet, but at the rate their going, they won't need it to be. They'll just be sold to people as a "safety" feature.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Your cell phone does or will have GPS built into it:

RE: Afraid this is going to come here, too

I've been telling you guys to read the Patriot Act and to get that Bill defeated. Will be bad news for you guys and I think you'll regret it.

RE: Afraid this is going to come here, too

Ya, stop the cops from being morons.

Way too many high speed pursuits cause injury and death because of police aggresiveness where it is not warranted.

Yes, I know you are a police officer. I also watch all the police chase shows.

Way too many needless pursuits that endanger way too many innocent people, IMHO. All for the "rush" of a cop making a bust, most of the time.

It's a little too late to get "that bill" defeated. It's been law since October 26th, 2001.

If you'd been participating in the political forum Splat set up months ago, you'd already know my feelings about the Patriot Act.

RE: Afraid this is going to come here, too

So it starts............it only a matter of time till the BEAST takes over

RE: Afraid this is going to come here, too

Mark,

I'm referring to the "amended" Patriot Act II which is ALOT scarier than the first one!! By it's very structure, this act will effectively make the USA a dictatorship..I kid you not..). Did that get rammed through while all the Americans were sleeping as well?

RE: Afraid this is going to come here, too

damn, id have gotten the chair by now if they had that chip in my car with all the 100+++mph activities i do.

RE: Afraid this is going to come here, too

If they do it,
It's only a matter of time before we figure out how to Disable it.

Not yet, as far as i can tell. John Asscroft is running around the country as we speak downplaying the unconstitutionality of the first patriot act as we speak. There are members of congress who signed it that are vocally opposed to lifting the sunset provsion, as certain other congressmen want to do. Many cities and counties across the country have passed resolutions to not comply with the feds on certain aspects of the patriot act. Hopefully the word will get out and people will start to realize whats going on and start to get pissed about it. They're doing everything they can to pull the wool over our eyes and screw us out of our rights one by one... people need to stand up and say something.

If that pisses you off you should look into our civil siezure laws. The feds can already (and could long before 9/11) come into your house, take what they want, not even charge you with a crime, and keep your stuff. Then if you want it back, you have to put up 10% of it's value (kinda hard when they take your life savings and your business, which is usually how they do it) then there is a court proceeding between the feds and your property, to which you are a third party. The burden of proof is not on the feds, either, it's on you, or more accurately, it's on your property. Your property has to prove with a preponderance of the evidence that it was not related to a crime that doesn't even have to be shown to have been committed.

RE: Afraid this is going to come here, too

A while ago I read a proposal for OBD-4 that included a mechanism for the police to shut down your vehicle remotely. I could see the headlines, 13-year-old with a computer and a transmitter shuts down rush hour traffic.

I don't know what kind of fascists think these ideas are good ones. Unfortunately most people don't care enough about "politics" to think about it, either they don't care to spend the time or they don't think they can make a difference, even though its their own personal freedoms that are being stolen.

RE: Afraid this is going to come here, too

One of the problems is that in the past, it wasn't necessarily the law that stood in the way of Big Brother, it was technology. In the past, it wasn't practical to snoop into everyone's bank records, medical history, reading habits, or personal correspondences, because most of it was kept on paper. The task would have been too daunting.

That's no longer the case today. The questions that need to be asked are: What price are we willing to pay in order to be safe? How do we know when we've gone too far?

The attitude that pisses me off more than any other is "if you don't have anything to hide, you've got nothing to worry about". Those are the words of a coward as far as I'm concerned. Someone who is willing to surrender his freedom to the state for the sake of his security. Someone who simply follows orders and never questions. Someone who isn't American.

Sorry, I don't mean to get so negative, but I really do feel strongly about this. Ashcroft is a zealot and in my opinion may very well be insane. Someone needs to stop him before he turns the Justice Department into the KGB.
