LP Burn - Freezer burn at its worst...

Yesterday at work I was filling some propane tanks when a gasket in the nozzle blew out and hit me with Liquid Propane. This is the result:

The picture doesnt really do it justice, it is a good 4 or 5 shades of purple/brown dead skin. This is definitely ultimate freezer burn. Propane in its liquid state is almost 50 degrees below 0 (*F). and at 65 psi, i got hit pretty good. My skin was frozen solid, like really hard, for the better part of a couple minutes. Now it just hurts ALOT. luckily its already starting to blister, so im on the downside now...

So where's the pictures of the blisters? ;-)

Sorry, that sure sounds sucky.

RE: LP Burn - Freezer burn at its worst...

actually I just took this pic like 5 min ago and had already popped them because I felt like I had leporacy or soemthing...

RE: LP Burn - Freezer burn at its worst...

Put some ice on it for 60 minutes.

It will be gone by tomorrow night.

Dang...I was gonna ask if I could come by and pop them for you with a darning needle. Maybe I can come by and help out when it's time to peel the dead skin???

RE: LP Burn - Freezer burn at its worst...

Same thing happened to me unbolting my NOS tank
(not as bad as yours),with the valve still open.
Hope it heals well.

RE: LP Burn - Freezer burn at its worst...

Thank goodness it was just your arm! Hope it heals quickly with no problems.

RE: LP Burn - Freezer burn at its worst...

OUCH!

That makes mine not hurt nearly as much as it used to! It turns more purple everyday, but keeping a damp cloth on it has helped a lot lately. I hope you heal quick!!

RE: LP Burn - Freezer burn at its worst...

Believe it or not, the skin is healed. It is only a little lighter in the burned areas than the unburned skin.

Be careful out there.

Alex, I cant believe you didn't know how flammable it is.I used to use them as a torch under the crack of the door when someone took too long in the shop bathrom.LOL

RE: LP Burn - Freezer burn at its worst...

Keep it wet with Mycitracin or Neosporin until it completely heals.

That worries me a bit. We tow our race car with a F-250 4x4(yes, the 460), and it runs on Propane. there is a 114 Gal. tank mounted in the bed, right behind my head. maybe I should really check those lines. I HATE filling it up.. cold cold cold.. and thats only a little jet wash from the open vent valve. I feel for ya bro.

I know it was flammable, but I was shocked that it burst into flames, since I was not working with a flame or other source of ignition.

Petroleum jelly works just as well, as that is the actual active ingredient in those mixtures. No one has ever shown that the antibiotics in those creams actually decrease infection vs. petroleum jelly alone.

Silvadene cream (a prescription cream) also has petroleum jelly as its main ingredient. The silver sulfadiazine in Silvadene has been shown to inhibit infections with various gram negative and gram positive bacteria and yeast.

What Dr. Dave said is true; the wound heals best if it is kept moist and covered. Use petroleum jelly and gauze dressing.

The dange of infection is if the skin blisters and opens up. Use Silvadene cream if a doctor can prescribe this for you.

Keep it wet with Mycitracin or Neosporin until it completely heals.
