Union?

RE: Union?

Personally, I hate unions. I used to work for the laziest union in existance, Teamsters. That is when I worked for UPS in college. The only way you could get promoted was senority, not job performance. There was no incentive to work harder than the minimum requirement.

RE: Union?

My only (slight) experience with Union was that they were good. Allow me to explain.
When I sold cars, there was no Union, UNLESS you sold Cadillacs, (to which I aspired to - but never did). Any other brand gave you the minimal health insurance that they could find, and it never included dental. It was for ONLY you, no spouce or offspring. As for a Demo, most places gave you a used car, or a cheap (entry level) new one. (Okay, I was with a good place and the owner liked me and I got what I wanted, with every option, in my color choice, but 95% of all other people did not get what I did.

Cadillac had a Union. Their salespersonal got the NEW Cadillac of THEIR choice, full medical insurance & Incl. Dental for BOTh employee & spouce. Children were available, at reduced cost. They had annual profit sharing, we didn't. They also got cost of living salary raises, annually and they got a paid 3 week vacation (we got 2 weeks). They also got their birthday off, and no more than 42 hours a week, UNLESS they wanted more. I always worked 55-60 hour weeks.

Cadillac guys got their year's pay, divided by 52 weeks to find the "average" and that is what they got for a Christmas bonus. WE (all other brands) got what they felt like giving us!
One year I recall getting a cheese platter, NO Bull___.

So, as for what I know, I think some Unions are good. At leasr, as you can see, from MY perspective.

RE: Union?

Well, let's see if I can go back and start at the beginning and not miss any, as there have been quite a few:

1-Carpenters
2-Teamsters
3-United Auto Workers
4-International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers
5-UAW {again}
6-IAMAW {again}
7- Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association

I made good money all those years, didn't have to be a suck a**, and retired with a comfortable income. If I had it to do all over again I'd do it the same way!!!!

RE: Union?

Let me see I get vested after 5 years....four week vacation after 3 years, Double time and a half for holidays if I work, Double time if I'm off...Company Car...short turn around...meal penalty's, overtime, lack of notice pay...the list goes on. was a member of

NABET .... National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians-Communications Workers of America

IATSE..... International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees

now am member. IBEW... International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers

RE: Union?

Well I use to be in the IBEW local 363 until I went into the family business. I loved it and still support the local in any way I can. They really took care of their members and If not for the family owning my business I would still be in the IBEW.

...first off, you didn't work for the union, unless you volunteered your help on off days, such as at rallies, picket lines, blood banks, etc. the union represents the worker's rights in the workplace. you worked for the company that paid you, in this case UPS, a notorious slave driver...but i walked their strike line and i'm glad we won!

...second, senority. excuse me, but you'd like to get promoted before the person who's been there for 10-15-20 years ahead of you, college boy??? won't happen.

...third, you want incentive to work harder? it's called the collective bargaining agreement. this normally includes raises, benefits, vacation, etc., for you & your family. THIS is your incentive. the only "incentive" you'd get out of UPS is 20 more stops on your run that day.

while i will freely admit that EVERY union has it's share of slackers, like the ocasional "bad cop"...i have no complaint with unions...they serve me well...it's what you contribute that produces end results.

....Local 799 International Longshoreman's Association
....Local 1240 International Firefighters Association
....Local 25 International Brotherhood of Teamsters

RE: Union?

Sheetmetal Workers International Union, Local 273, Santa Barbara, CA.
I worked at the trade for almost 40 years. If you wantd a promotion, you earned it by your own abilities and reputation on the job. Full health care for the whole family, including dental and vision care. Retired 9 years ago at almost full pay. If I had to do it over, I would do the same thing.

RE: Union?

I can see where this is going, so I will keep my mouth shut. I am not in a union, and share very strong feelings about them. They do serve some people extremely well.
