Mad Cow

Anyone for a hamburger? This is insane, do you believe this? A quote from the news article.

"U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman said the risk to human health in this U.S. case was "extremely low." Parts of the cow that would be infected - the brain, the spinal cord and the lower part of the small intestine - were removed before the animal went to a meat processing plant."

The REST of this cow went to the processing plant to be sent out to be consumed???? By US??? Talk about greedy!

RE: Mad Cow

Those bastards!

I'm a big fan of eating meat, beef in particular, but the way it's produced nowadays is disgusting. They feed the leftovers from the cows to the pigs and the leftovers from teh pigs to the cows, and they wonder why the hell things like mad cow pop up.

RE: Mad Cow

Do what I do. Eat Kosher meat exclusively! Herds raised & branded as Kosher are fed proper feed and never other animals carcus or feces. All meat is 3 times inspected, and bears the US certifacation, as well as the Kosher certifaction, as well as the PRIME certifacation. Animals relieve thamselves in a different area in which they feed, and their feces are carted away hourly.
A prime Kosher hamburger at home will make you realize just what McDonalds has been serving you!

In this country it is and has been illegal to feed beef by-products back to cows. They probably didn't get to test the brain and spinal material until after the cow had been butchered, as is normal. They can track it down.

I raise beef cattle, and now prices will crash and burn. Oh boy.

If you want good meat, buy it straight from the farm. Then you can find out if it has been injected with hormones, fed antibiotics, and/or feed made out of animal by-products. My cattle are not fed this crap. It will cost a little more, and you'll have to have a freezer, but then again you are cutting out the middle man and the farmer will be getting the money directly, which is a good thing.

Sandy has an excellent point, too. Kosher food is very high quality and must be handled in the cleanest fashion.

Zebra will you sell me a cow?

RE: Mad Cow

There's a place around here (Mt. Clemens meat packing) that sells nothing but Amish meat. If we're going to cook up some steaks that's where we usually go. It's damn good.

RE: Mad Cow

Hey steph, can you ship that stuff? Or does it become cost prohibative. Cattle farming is tough work. Got a friend in Wisconsin that is a dairy farmer and does some butchering.

RE: Mad Cow

Ahhh Sandy...I thought you ate that Canadian beef and thought it was smashing...what's up?? :)

But Canada is one of the few countries NOT banning your beef at this time. Are we great, or what?? LOL

RE: Mad Cow

I saw the heading on this thread and I thought you guys were talking about my wife! (oy am I in trouble if Fran sees this)

RE: Mad Cow

Actually, I would not blame you guys if you banned our beef. You gotta look out for the best intrest of your people. It is a very nice gesture though, considering we banned yours.

"" Ahhh Sandy...I thought you ate that Canadian beef and thought it was smashing...what's up?? ""

Yes, it was past excellent, but as you recall - it WAS Kosher, recall?

If anyone's interested, it's brand is LAZAR, and it's from Canada, it's PRIME and KOSHER and and triple inspected. Hi-End premium American grocers carry it. In the NY NJ area it's in larger Shop-Rites. Expensive, & worth it! :) Especially the Beef Rib Steaks

RE: Mad Cow

I thought Canada had their own Mad Cow scare in the last couple of years?

The good thing about Mad Cow disease is that it is not contagious from animal to animal. It is only transferred through bad feed.

Beef is shipped frozen all the time, but yes, there is extra cost involved. I'd love to provide you guys good quality beef, but am not big enough. I am going to raise a calf or two to slaughter this spring for me and some friends, especially since the price of cattle will crash now. I will have to charge a premium for it, which I've avoided in the past, (which is why I've never made any money at it!) but everyone gets to choose how thick their steaks will be, the package size of the (very lean) hamburger and roasts, etc.

The hamburger you buy in the grocery store comes from sick and old cattle. If I get a cow with "cancer-eye" or who won't get pregnant, I sell her at the local stockyards to a buyer who sends her to a rendering plant where she is turned into hamburger, it is mixed with tons of other hamburger, processed into patties, frozen and shipped all over. They add waste beef fat to it, and water it to add weight. (The added water is why it spatters when you cook it.) If the hamburger you are looking at in the store is pink, it's because it has so much added fat. If it is dark red it has less fat, but they also can dye it.

The hamburger I sell does not have fat or water added to it. (It is very dark red, the color of a good steak.) If I have a HEALTHY cow that breaks a leg or something like that, I turn the entire cow into hamburger. Roasts, steaks, brisket; all the cuts of quality meat go into hamburger and it makes a very lean ground chuck. I do not have them add any fat. You have to add grease to the pan when you cook this stuff! (But it can fall apart when making hamburgers, so some people add egg to it.) It makes wonderful spaghetti or chili. The people I've sold it to are always begging me to get them more!

I am going to try to find an organic feed for these two calves. I always use a grain-based feed, but have a couple of months to do research, and like the idea of certified organic. I may have to go somewhere far away to get the feed and buy it in bulk.

I already know my animals haven't been fed/injected with hormones, antibiotics, etc. I know where my hay came from, and the calves are free-range grazed until their last 30 to 60 days. Even then they have pasture access and are not isolated in a stall or dirt pen. Calves gain weight best if they are fed out in pairs or groups, and they benefit from pasture access. It is much less stressful on their system. They are built to eat grass and roughage, not solid grain.

The cattle breed also makes a difference in quality, and the butcher makes a lot of difference too. I send my Limousine/Angus or Brangus cross calves to an Amish, USDA approved processor.

I am considering going into business raising and selling "natural" beef, (organic is probably not possible for someone with a small operation in part because everything must go back three years. I can't wait that long to have an income) but must do research, find customers, and see if the demand is there.

I hope I haven't grossed anybody out too much!

RE: Mad Cow

Very impressive, Steph! You know your stuff! :) I rummaged around to find the brochure I get from my butcher to see what it says....(Never before bothered to read it) :(

* No added fat
* Dark Red in color (should say "pink" ?NO?)
* No added water
* Organic Feed and clean pasture grass
* 100% Pasture herd
* Pasture cleaned (scrapped) semi-hourly
* Slaughtered in Kosher Slaughter houses
* Sold to Kosher Butchers exclusively
* Frozen with time date of sale
Premises inspected monthly by Koshering Agent.

Sounds okay to me.... I learned from you, as well. Now, I will never enjoy a McDonalds, Burger king, Wendy's or White Castle, again....
I think the meat in Canada is better, from the few samples that I have bought. Even the Kosher meat seems better (tastier) to me, but who knows WHAT they put in it to make it "tastier" than American counterpart. Maybe http://www.mark8.org/users/RRocket/rd.jpg

PS/ JEEPERS went to Phila., Pa today. "Pensy-People" don't be surprised if you see JEEPERS there, today! :)

RE: Mad Cow

Sandy,

Yeah..we get our cows stoned before we ship em' to slaughter. Relaxes them quite a bit..makes for a better cut of meat. The more stoned and relaxed we get them, the more tender the meat. :) Sandy..please click on this link...look at picture and READ THE CAPTION. This could be the answer!! http://www.visualsunlimited.com/browse/vu599/vu59936.html

I've also noticed that Canadian steak seems tastier than US. Not that US is bad beef, it's quite good. Maybe my taste buds are biased! I was eating at a fancy steak house in the US. My steak was AWESOME!! I said "This is the best steak I've ever had in the US. I asked about the steak, so I could be on the lookout for the brand if I went to another steakhouse. They replied the beef was from Canada...DOH!

Are there orthers on here who prefer food products from a different country to their own? I like your cheese....especially your WI cheese curds!! YUMMMM!!

Americans seems particularly fond of our Canadian back bacon..anyone like the stuff? I personaly am not too fond of it...but the Americans go crazy for the stuff, and buy it in huge amounts!

I bought a Moon Pie, but much preferedd the Canadian version called a Wagon Wheel. The Canadian version has raspberry jelly in it, which the US counterpart did not.

We also have a dish here (even served at Burger King) called "Poutine". It is fries with gravy smothered in melted cheese curds. It's ok. Anyone ever have this? A few American buddies HAVE to get some everytime they visit.

Then there's the classic argument. Which beer is better? Plenty of Americans I know like the Canadian beer, as it is stronger. I niot beer drinker, so I don't know. American cigarettes smell wretched next to Canadian ones. Hardly any smell in comparison.

You guys have an assortment of candy bars we don't get, and the ones we do get, the American versions taste better

It's against the law here to sell Mountain Dew with caffeine in it.

That's it..I can't think of anything else...help me out...

RE: Mad Cow

Oy, too long..
Yes, the small amounts of Canadian beef that I've had are exceptional.
I didn't like Moon Pies, and I doubt Wagon Wheels are much better.
No American has ever heard of POUTINE, I am sure. It does not sound like something I'd like, for sure!! :(
My favorite beer is Canadian (I think... Rolling Rock ?)
I've never had a "Canadian Cigarette", I assumed you had the same 4-hundred thousand brands that we have. A pack of cigarettes typicaly lasts me 2 weeks. I smoke like 1 a day, once in a while, I'll have a 2nd one on the same day. I smoke MAX 120s.
Candy Bars I don't eat......waisted calories, rather have an onion pizza.
....and not that I like it ( :( ) but why is Mountain Dew banned there?? Of course, I like R/C Cola and 7-up. I hate with a passion Sprite (pee juice). Will drink a Coke if all available, never a Puksi! A&W Root Beer is good. You have Stewart's Root Beer up there? It's way "gassy" you can actually explode a can by merely a few shakes!

RE: Mad Cow

Peanut butter and jelly is sounding pretty good right now.
