Teen accused of BMW scam

NEWARK, New Jersey (AP) --A teenage boy posing as a banker duped an Ohio car dealership into delivering a $123,000 BMW to him at his high school, police said Thursday.

A second order was never shipped after the dealership became suspicious, and the teen was arrested. The first car was later found in Raleigh, North Carolina, police said.

"He apparently sold the car, and it ended up in a dealership in North Carolina," said Detective Scott Davis of the Dublin, Ohio, police.

The boy was 16 in early January when he ordered the 12-cylinder 2004 BMW 760Li with "black sapphire metallic" paint and a heated steering wheel and seats. He told Midwestern Auto Group that his bank would confirm the wire transfer, authorities said.

After completing and returning paperwork that was mailed to his home, the teen called the dealership pretending to be a banker confirming the transfer, police said.

The car was delivered to him at Dickinson High School on January 27, two weeks after the boy turned 17, police said.

That same day, he ordered a second car. But when Midwestern Auto Group learned that the first payment was never made, the dealership contacted police.

The boy was arrested at his Jersey City home late last month.

Police said the teen was not hard to find. "He did use his correct name, as far as I know," Davis said.

The teen is charged with theft by deception and was no longer in custody, Sgt. Edgar Martinez said. Authorities did not release the boy's name because he is a juvenile.

RE: Teen accused of BMW scam

Aww, give him a break, he did manage to get a free BMW........ Nice turn of events against a stealership huh. the conman got conned....By a HS kid no less.

RE: Teen accused of BMW scam

Midwestern Auto Group is right down the street. They always have very nice cars. Around my neck of the woods we think this is pretty funny.

RE: Teen accused of BMW scam

What a genius. The part that I thought was the most intelligent was when he gave his real name. I wonder how they ever tracked him down.

1. I heard on the radio today that the kid did not want the car to begin with, he wanted the money, with which to buy a CORVETTE and pay back some betting debts.

2. As a car salesman for 27 years, with high ethics & morals, I resent your inferance that all salesman are "con-men" ~ No car salesmen that I ever met, were con-men. If they delt dishonestly with potential buyers, it was because they were forced to by the dealership's upper management or owner. THEY are the ones who dictate everything that goes on, and let me tell you, I have met many, many "con-buyers" who have their car appraised by the used car mgr. and then switch tires to four "baldies" that night and come in riding on "slicks" the next day. Also swap out a good battery for a dead one. I can't tell you how many cars I have appraised WITH a spare tire in them, and miracle of miracles, two days later when it comes in for trade, I look again, and there's NO spare in it!!

As I have said, here, 1,000 times, IF IF IF IF you stay the heck off of the HIGHWAY and avoid the HIGHWAY razz-ma-tazz sis-boom-ba dealers, and only go to the smaller, family owned, in-town, community dealer, you will NOT be subjected to the type of treatment that you don't like to get, and that car salesmen do not like to give!
Tellers in the bank follow the rules, accountants follow the rules, and car salespeople likewise follow the rules. If we don't - we are fired. We are not con-men, we are following the rules set forth for us to follow. Is that so hard for you to understand?????????????????????????

RE: Teen accused of BMW scam

Your right from one perspective Sandy, every car salesman is a con man.

But many many dealerships pull shots to confuse and intimidate and outright con the consumer. Not all, but many. I certainly didnt come up with the term stealership or build the used car salesman stereotype of a shifty fast talking guy in a plaid blazer.

No need for an argement here-- you have your view and I have mine and I suspect neither will change. But your right, I was wrong to apply that stereotype to all car salesman.

Really? So that's your view, don't say that I said it. I did *NOT* !
Futhermore, I never owned a plaid blazer.

I Presently know 2 lawyers serving time for their "Cons". I know of no car salesmen (nor dealers) serving time.
Car salesmen are exceptionally hard working, long hours invested, family men. I have never been blessed to know a rich car salesman, unless they won the lottery!

RE: Teen accused of BMW scam

OOPS --- there was a typo ---------- "NOT" was suppose to be in there............

RE: Teen accused of BMW scam

Sandy,
Correct me if I'm out of line here.
It's usually the salesman who is ON YOUR SIDE.
It's the F&I people you need to watch out for.
When I sold cars for a short peroid ,they would screw me and/or my customers 9 out of 10 times.

RE: Teen accused of BMW scam

Hey Joey, I was a car salesman. How bout me? Con-Man? j/k. Heck I put myself thru college selling cars. In fact, by my third year in business, people made appointments to see me. I would come in from school with appointments lined up, and sure as sheet, people would be there on time, like they had a doctor's appointment. The only way you get there is by treating people, not good, but great.

I would have loved to sell cars with side by side with Sandy. It would have been an honor to have him take my "ups" when I had a day off. Trust is a really big thing in the car business between salespeople. You never know when that one sale, maybe even a minnie commission, turns into 5 more sales because people bring in the family and relatives. A successful salesman is one who never has to take "ups". That is what every salesman should strive for to be successful in the business.

Like Sandy said, the only lying was created by the management, not the salesman, who has nothing to gain by it, except a lost customer for life..

Even funnier than that..
"Dickinson High School" right down the street from where I live.
Around here we think it's pretty funny as well.
Around here, ANYONE would have known there are nothing but crackeads and prostitutes in Dickinson.
That kid probably had to call New Jersey before he found someone that didn't freak out when he said "dickinson".

{HAHA}
that's pretty funny.
OWNED!
Or "preOWNED" depending on how you look at it.

RE: Teen accused of BMW scam

Bryan, Sandy I might trust to sell me a car off a lot BUT YOU?????????? (cough)

LOL

As ive been telling sandy in PM -- the dealership as a whole is looking for ways to rape the avg guy who buys a car -- not so much the individual salesman... F&I especially, dealer add ons, service department, etc. DO I think salesmen are squeaky clean --- nooooooo.... but not the most culpable in the place either.

BTW - For clarification -- it was a typo earlier that all salesmen are crooks. should have been all salesmen are NOT crooks ---

"Like Sandy said, the only lying was created by the management, not the salesman, who has nothing to gain by it, except a lost customer for life.."

IMHO, Don't blame it on management. I think that is a lemming type excuse. Everyone in my company is required to read, and certify every year, business conduct guidelines set forth by the company. It keeps everyone from crossing the line, and ethical. If you do not comply, you will be terminated.

The Sarbanes Oxley Act (for any publicly traded company), that became law in 2002, is a prime example of where everyone is headed. We can all thank Arthur Anderson, and Enron for getting the ball rolling.

RE: Teen accused of BMW scam

Good grief, suddenly I am surrounded by fellow con men. Oops, car salesmen.
I worked with a man who was truly unique. He was indeed 1 in 1,000. His name was Nate, and he not only knew every trick in the book, he knew the ones not IN the book. Man made $100,000.00 a year as a salesman! I learned alot from him, but never had the balls to implement them. He worked-over fellow salesmen, the management, the customer, had the F & I guy bangin' his head against the wall, too. Freakin' Nate was sumpin else!
Had a deal with all salesmen on the floor. If your customer walked w/out buying, that customer was fair game for Nate. Nate ran out and "caught the fish" before they left, pulled them back inside, and wrote the deal AT A HIGHER PRICE than other guys on the floor let them out with in the first place!! If Nate wrote the deal, you got half & half was Nate's!!
Then he started something else, and almost got fired, so he backed down on that one. Guy was smooth as silk, a theatre genius. I lost track of him. I wish I hadn't. His goal was to retire at 50 with Mil in the bank. I am sure he made it. His favorite expression was ....
"LETS GO GET MORE MONEY, HONEY" !!
Guy was best described as a satin-silk shark

RE: Teen accused of BMW scam

Is Nate just your alter ego Sandy? Are you using another name so as to not make us think that you might be boasting?

That description you gave of "Nate" is exactly how I had pictured you to be as a salesperson. ;)

RE: Teen accused of BMW scam

No, of course not! I could never hope to be Nate. He was 1 in a million.

I'll tell you one Nate story. This one particular day (a Saturday) the owner & general manager had told us that they would not be coming in. Owner was ill. and general manager's wife was having a baby. Service/Parts was closed on Saturday. Nate had a key to the showroom, and arrived at 8:00AM, like about 40 minutes before the rest of us. He made a sign for the showroom door that said:
"CLOSED TODAY DUE TO EMERGENCY" ~ He then pulled his demo into the shop and closed the overhead door. From inside, lookig thru a one way window he watched as each one of the other salesmen arrived, parked, came to the front door, pulled door, read note & left. After all 5 of us had left, it was like 9:10AM ~ he removed the sign, turned on the showroom lights, unlocked the doors, and proceeded to work alone all day, taking every UP (customer) that arrived, and in the process, sold 4 cars that day.
