Drivers Spot X-Rated Films in Other Cars

DETROIT - Andrea Carlton hadn't planned on telling her daughter about the birds and bees until she was 8 or 9. But that changed the night 4-year-old Catherine spotted a porno movie flickering on a screen in a minivan nearby.

"Just like there's no windows in a strip club, you shouldn't be able to see inside windows in a car when they're watching X-rated movies," said Carlton, a 26-year-old from Gurnee, Ill.

More and more Americans are buying vehicles with DVD players, usually to keep the kids entertained. But an increasing number of other people on the road are catching a glimpse through the windows of more than just "Finding Nemo" and "SpongeBob SquarePants."

Depending on where they are driving or parked, motorists could face fines and even jail time for screening X-rated stuff. But where the law may not be clear, some are calling for tighter regulation.

"Residents should not be subjected to those obscenities," said Flint City Councilwoman Carolyn Sims, who is examining whether an ordinance packing a $500 fine is needed. "They do have a right to have peace and tranquility and not to have this exposure to sex in their face."

A driver in Schenectady, N.Y., was arrested last month after rolling past police with a DVD titled "Chocolate Foam" playing on the passenger-side sun visor in his Mercedes-Benz, authorities said. The movie also was rolling on screens set into the car's headrests.

The driver was accused of breaking state laws prohibiting watching TV while driving, as well as another law making it illegal to exhibit sexually explicit material in a public place.

"The detective had a clear view of what was playing through the window. Anyone walking by on the street could have seen it," Schenectady police Lt. Peter Frisoni Jr. said of the nighttime traffic stop. "If he had dark, tinted windows where you couldn't see in, that wouldn't be a public display."

As for Carlton, she was driving in the Chicago suburb of Buffalo Grove with her daughter when Catherine glimpsed the sexually explicit movie. The experience last fall upset the girl and angered Carlton.

Carlton and her husband sat down with Catherine and offered the best explanation they could. Since then, Carlton has spotted other motorists with explicit movies playing, including a couple watching from the back seat of their car in a store parking lot.

"You're not allowed to have sex in your car, so why are you allowed to watch it?" Carlton asked.

Most states, including Michigan, have laws that make it illegal to watch TV while driving. Laws governing the exhibition of pornography vary by state, but experts say they could be applied to drivers as well.

"I think those restrictions would apply if the content is located in a vehicle," said Jeff Matsuura, director of the law and technology program at the University of Dayton. "You have effectively moved beyond the privacy of your own home."

During the day, it is often difficult to see what is playing inside another vehicle. But at night, the screens are easily visible from a passing car or a vehicle stopped alongside at a traffic light. The screens are also getting bigger.

In Flint, Sims took up the issue after hearing from a woman who was driving with her 5-year-old when she spotted porn playing on a vehicle's 13-inch TV screen. A police officer who happened to see the display pulled over the driver, Sims said, but let him off with a warning.

To Sims, a 23-year police veteran who retired in 2001, playing an explicit movie in view of other motorists or pedestrians is akin to flashing or having sex in a public place.

But Michigan State Police, who have not had any cases of in-car porn, say playing an X-rated movie might not be easy to prosecute unless it can be proved that the motorist intended for others to see it.

lol thats some funny stuff. So far i've only seen cartoons when I drove by cars that had DVDs running. It didn't even cross my mind that they played that kind of stuff on there. Here come the angry mothers once more.

It wasn't me....

RE: Drivers Spot X-Rated Films in Other Cars

RE: Drivers Spot X-Rated Films in Other Cars

nothing makes the miles go faster. Faster, harder... oops wrong setting.LOL

RE: Drivers Spot X-Rated Films in Other Cars

Well it's kind of funny, not when a little kid gets sight of it though. I was on the highway with my friend and we got behind some suv with about 5 screens and all of them with a porn flick on. We didn't pass him for a while! Definitely laughed our ass off when we first realized what he was playing.

RE: Drivers Spot X-Rated Films in Other Cars

that's apparently a popular thing to do now.

RE: Drivers Spot X-Rated Films in Other Cars

I have passed a few cars with pornos playing before, usually late at night after 11 pm so I really didnt think about the fact that kids could see it. Thought it was kinda funny actually. Also you have to be directly behind most of these cars in order to see it and it would make sense to me that a driver/parent would usually have the first view and if they saw something like that to change lanes or something to that effect or stop a minute to put some distance between the two cars....

RE: Drivers Spot X-Rated Films in Other Cars

we live in a PC world, those soccer mom's arent going to change lanes! there going to set new laws in place so they dont have to change lanes

Ain't THAT the truth, and don't it STINK? I don't like what you do, or your choices, or what you drive, or your hobby, or or or so my group is gonna make new laws to stop you from doing what we don't like you doing! (and, they will and they do!) :(
My childhood friend recently moved into a condo development (mistake) and was handed a 7 page sheet of what he could & could not do, on the property of the $285,000 condo he just bought!

No car washing in the driveway, nor car waxing, nor car work. Got a truck? Has to go IN the garage, NOT in the driveway. Must be kept out of sight! No exterior decorations of any type, cannot hang out flag on Flag Day or any other time. Christmas decorations must be INSIDE the residence, as in the window. Nothing exterior. Must clean up after dog, with puppy bag and adsolutely no litter. Littering causes a $500.00 fine. If having a party, all guests MUST remain INSIDE the house at all times. No hangin' out - outside & no loud music. 6 more pages after that. Friend says he feels like he is in a very nice, modern jail.

LOL! :)

Sounds like the lease agreement I had once while working in FL. Poor low life 'driller' had to park his new company pickup in an alley down the street! The nearly new customized van we had was 'inspected' to see if had seats behind the driver so as not to be classified as a 'truck'.

RE: Drivers Spot X-Rated Films in Other Cars

If i ever buy a home and get a list of what i can and can't do, i'm going to cancel the check and do a huge burnout all the way down the street.

RE: Drivers Spot X-Rated Films in Other Cars

Caveat emptor, he should have know where he was buying a condo, most of them have rules like that. Especially adult living communities, they are like private towns, that is why they can restrict purchases to old people only. If he don't like it he should have bought a condo else where.

RE: Drivers Spot X-Rated Films in Other Cars

So why is society so hung up on and repressed about sex? Oh, that's right, we live in a society founded on Christianity...

What is so inappropriate about porn that kids should be shielded from it at all costs?

The soccer moms don't want those kids to learn how to reproduce. The soccer moms have seen by their own experience that reproduction only leads to the production of more brats.

RE: Drivers Spot X-Rated Films in Other Cars

What's next? No more "Straight Outta Compton" in your car CD player?

Kale

"If i ever buy a home and get a list of what i can and can't do, i'm going to cancel the check and do a huge burnout all the way down the street."

AMEN , but belive it of not the property that i bought had a 4 page list of "deed resrictions" Non of them where bad, most where Anti-trailer trash. some where like. No chickens, no trailers, no non-registered cars, no House could be built under 1800sqft, no "shacks" etc..

Most of these are aimed at keeping the lower class out of the area, but the price to buy the land i couldnt really see them affording it.

Rip the check, rip up the rules, and then do what you said. All while laughing.

RE: Drivers Spot X-Rated Films in Other Cars

no non-registered cars
[/quote]

No track cars? That would be a deal breaker for me.

RE: Drivers Spot X-Rated Films in Other Cars

Exactly. I wouldn't sign on for the no non-registered cars bit. And no chickens is kind of BS too, if you're out in the boonies (chickens make good guard, uh, chickens, not to mention good eatin').

I regularly have non-registered cars at home. Sometimes when you have 3 or 4 cars and are trying to sell one or two of them (and not driving them all) it's just not cost effective to have insurance and plates on all of them.

I can see having a list of what you can and can't build. For example if you live on the water in harrison twp. you can't build your privacy fence closer than 10 feet from the water, so as not to block your neighbors view. But when you try to limit what people can do on their property (work on cars, own a lot of cars, etc.) then it's stupid.
