We got in my dads bravada this morning to go to breakfast. He starts to back up and realizes he has no power steering. So of course i have him pop the hood to check it out. The belt had been thrown off, but it wasn't broken or anything, and the tensioner seemed fine. So i put the belt back on and had him fire it up. I couldn't see any problems, but then i noticed some little tufts of fur floating around.
I looked a little more closely, and i saw something furry down there, under the engine, now out of the way of the belt and everything. Sure enough, a kitten had crawled up there and got caught in the belt somehow when we started the truck.
We shut the truck off, and got him out of there by poking him with a stick. Once he was on the ground, we backed the truck up and were surprised to find the cat still breathing. He was unconscious, and i didn't think he was going to make it. One of his back legs looked like it was broken, if not both, and i thought he might have a broken back. His skin wasn't broken anywhere, but he did have a little blood coming out of his nose. So my dad called 911 and asked them what to do, they contacted animal control, and animal control called my dad back and had us bring the cat in. We loaded him up and took him in, and on the way he started meowing pretty loudly, and clawing at something in the trunk. So he might just make it, who knows.
I've heard of that happening before but i've never actually seen it. Hopefully the cat will be okay, and i'm glad i'm not cleaning kitty guts out of my dads engine compartment.
