Has anyone else seen this? Floridians are being evacuated and it is said that Frances is at least 2x bigger than charley and andrew! Where are our Florida members at? Do you people have somewhere to go? Keep us informed, I'd hate to lose people in florida. (especially before the election...gotta learn how to vote down there...)Be safe!!!

RE: Hurricane Frances

It looks bad. My Corp office is in Ft Lauderdale and they closed this morning.

Good luck guys!

RE: Hurricane Frances

Im over in Tampa, im not on the east coast, but this storm is so powerful it has me a bit worried about my family and the family assests ::nono::

We just redone the entire landscaping too ::roll::

I hope you guys in the east coast get through this one.

RE: Hurricane Frances

I have family living in Boca Raton, and I have tried to talk them into leaving - with no luck. They are boarding-up, including strapping the garage door down to protect their highly modded T/A, and 04 Mach 1. They are also loading the pool up, and I suggested they dig a hole in their yard and bury a plastic tub full of keepsakes.

They cleared a closet out to hide in, and expect me to bring them a generator from ATL when it clears ::wtf:: I told my Sister - why bother... you will not have anything to plug in any way xo Nothing I could say would change their mind to leave.

I hope that thing turns right, and spares FLA from a direct hit. I pray everyone weathers this storm, and God looks after them in their time of need.

RE: Hurricane Frances

Geez, and here I thought it was ME that meant bad luck for Florida. Shortly after I move back to Florida from Southern California (two weeks after 9/11), and Steve Spurrier up & quits the Gators a few months later. So I figure it's a sign that I'm bad luck for Florida. Then, I leave South Florida this past spring to move BACK to Southern California, and there's a plague of Hurricanes. Should've been smooth sailing for FLA now that I'm gone. What gives???

J/K, BTW...

Seriously tho, this one looks pretty nasty. Much bigger, stronger, and wetter than Charley ever hoped to be. My parents, grandparents, and sisters are scattered all around South Florida & I think they're ALL gonna get at least a piece of Frances. Am crossing my fingers & toes on this one!

RE: Hurricane Frances

Looks like its going to miss me up here in the pandhandle, but if it swings into the gulf of mexico, it will pick up lots of power. Just like hurricane Opal did when it tore through here. I think if i remember correctly it was only CAT 2 or something? when it hit land here in Fort Walton Beach. I still rmember moving crap off the road like pieces of houses and sailboats off of highway 98 with 10K AT fork lift from that one.
You guys stay safe down there...

RE: Hurricane Frances

Mike,

What is your sister's mindset? I mean..why would they stay? What are they hoping to accomplish? I mean, they are powerless to do anything about the storm, so why try to wait it out? Is it a hassle to leave for the weekend? Just trying to understand...no hurricanes here!

RE: Hurricane Frances

Here is my take on it. Since I live here I can say it. Why should anybody feel sorry for us? I am the one who moved to Florida. I am the one who said that I had to live near the water. I knew when I moved here that there were hurricanes. These are not some new thing that just came along. I accepted the risk when I made these CHOICES. I made sure a long time ago to have the proper insurance and plenty of it. Dont feel sorry for us. We could have moved away a long time ago. We also could have chosen to live inland. To me, its kinda like the guy who buys a house next to the airport then complains about how loud the planes are.

As for the people who refuse to leave and stay in there homes, it drives me nuts. I dont get to leave. I get stuck living at the police dept. 24 hours a day. Throughout the night I get sent out to people homes to save their sorry butts becouse they decided that they were tougher than mother nature. And no, I dont want you to feel sorry for me. I chose this line of work.

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

Ron, I wish I knew the real reason. I get the typical lame excuses, like - The last time I left, the damn thing chased me up the coast, and, Everyone I know is staying, except the ones that are told to leave by law enforcement. And her favorite, the too much traffic excuse.

She has lived in FLA for 25 years, and has been very lucky so far. Andrew hit just about 50 miles south of her, and as she said it was horrible - like the world was coming to an end, they came out of it unscathed.

My take is like yours, Ron. Get out of the way... I told her Tuesday - Come to ATL, and spend some quality time visiting your brother. What did she have to lose by doing that is beyond my comprehension. She would rather spend time weathering a cat 4 hurricane than spend time with her bro?

I lived in south Florida from 1979 to 1985, and I can tell you that I did not hang around when one came close.

RE: Hurricane Frances

I evacuated Charleston when a hurricane was supposed to hit there in (i think) '99. I sat in traffic for about 12 hours before pulling over and sleeping in my car (i still wasn't "evacuated"). It took me over 4 hours to go 10 miles. Then the damn thing made a right turn and didn't even hit Charleston, so i had to turn around and go back the next day. So yeah, i can see why people don't want to evacuate.

Exactly...

Most of the gas stations on I-4 have all run out of gas, and very congested... I rather stay home then be stuck in the middle of no where.

RE: Hurricane Frances

i have been on lock down here in miami since thursday. my area was ordered to evavuate but after living through andrew most of use dont feel the need to leave since it was half as strong. on friday my brother house lost power on the first gust of wind the storm put through. the gas station ran out of gas thursday night and all the ones who did not had two hour lines to get gas. this stuff is crazy. not to mention i spent the entire week putting up storm shutters and getting ready. this also means i did not get any work done this week either. things should be ok after the storm finally leaves the state and all the debrie is moved out of the roads.

RE: Hurricane Frances

Well? Everyone ok? The storm apparently headed east for the pan-handle, crossing the whole state of Florida, including tampa, orlando, and the likes. it stretched from St. Augustine to Tampa...all at once... that's crazy!!!

Right when you folks read this, look behind you...here comes Frances' obsessive shadow...IVAN!

RE: Hurricane Frances

i spoke to my mother back in miami and she said this thing wasnt worth all the hype. she said there were a few gusts and some rain but supposedly west palm got like 10 inches of rain in one night. shes more concerned about the hurricane coming right up behind it thats goin 20mph and is already up to a cat3.

RE: Hurricane Frances

We'll I made it through fine, our neighbors dock washed away and ran up against ours, 8 major trees down, 3 across the driveway, i had to get a ride with freinds back to campus. Basically the only thing that survived was my mk viii! I parked it at a neighbors garage because we dont have a covered one. It was definately the worst storm i've seen in 19 years in jacksonville. Back in g-ville my dorm flooded but i wasnt there for that madness. Hope everyone else made it out with only material losses!

RE: Hurricane Frances

After hurricane andrew i would say this storm was like a gentle gust of wind. there will be problems of course through out the entire state as it seemed to hit every one. over flowing of water levels and of course trees falling on power lines but i think florida is very reziliant and we can pull through.

RE: Hurricane Frances

I just got my power back on after 27 hours. Other than that I had no damage. I sure did miss my AC. It was downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it hit Tampa (70 mph winds).

RE: Hurricane Frances

Glad it wasn't any worse.

Although I do have to wonder why anyone would want to live in a mobile home in Florida during hurricane season.

RE: Hurricane Frances

Finally got my power on, after 36hours!! Man, I just bought a whole lot of meat the day before :( I’m talking 25 pounds worth of meat.

Anyhow, some parts of town are flooded, busy intersections too!
The power going out made everyone frustrated, and the continuous rain didn’t help either. But the winds weren’t too bad, I think only about 35-65Mph winds. Its just the duration was too long.

I’m glad I have my AC back on.
