Dealer thievery at its best! Like Leo's article points out, you can get the HID bulb alone for around $150 - $175 and replace it yourself. Even the complete new assembly with HID included is available for around $325. Replacing the complete assembly is all of about 5 minutes - that dealer was quoting you a labor rate over $4,000/hr!!!

Atleast you might save some other owner from falling into the same trap.

The dealers aren't just charging for the bulb, they are also charging for the ballast. Pre 98 Marks did not have plug-and-play bulbs so the ballast is hardwired in. When the service manager looks at the service manual it says to replace everything so they do. Nobody takes the initiative to simply cut and splice the wires.

Like my dealer, it sounds like yours wants to just replace everything rather than actually diagnose the problem.
I'm a little concerned that you get no headlight at all. Usually when the HID fails, it does so slowly, getting dimmer over time. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe a short or ballast? Just hope it isn't the ballast, cuz that'll cost a pretty penny (around $500 I believe).
Be aware that '97s usually require soldering/splicing of the power leads to the HIDs. 98's built after a certain date have plug connectors mounted near the top of the radiator.
