Ford Motor Co. is recalling its $140,000 Ford GT supercar to repair a defect that could cause loss of control.

Nearly 450 vehicles - all Ford GTs built to date - are affected by a suspension component problem that originated with a supplier, said spokeswoman Kristen Kinley. The part can crack because of a casting error.

"If it cracks, it could cause the wheel to become unstable," said Kinley, who would not identify the supplier. "And if the wheel becomes unstable at high speed, that's a safety issue."

The recall could tarnish the kudos Ford received for the fast-track engineering process it used to develop the 550-horsepower two-seater. Ford rushed the GT into production to mark the automaker's centennial in 2003.

"Maybe they weren't quite as thorough as they needed to be," said Bill Visnic, senior technical editor of the Southfield-based trade publication, Ward's AutoWorld. "If I were somebody who bought a GT and was exercising it a bit as it was designed to do, I'd be certainly a little annoyed. This wasn't the dome light switch that didn't work."

The recall was voluntary, Kinley said. There were no complaints or accidents related to the defect, which was discovered during an inspection .

Of the 448 vehicles affected by the recall, 111 are in the hands of private owners. Ford has contacted the owners and warned them not to drive the car until the automaker determines how to fix the problem, Kinley said. Ford will pick up vehicles in private hands.

What a shame, and to top it off, ford did what it does best by carrying the blame on the supplier, or anything it can find.

That company is a disaster, I really hope they either become organized and shake up management (they are getting a bit better after Nasser) or they will be responsible for their own self destruction.

My family and I have been buying ford products for as long as I can remember, and now I cant even stand to ride in one.

BAH...

I currently have 3 Lincolns and I love them all...

I'm also fairly certain that I've done things in not only my 94 MK but also numerous new Town Cars that would have finished off a lesser vehicle...

You haven’t lived until you’ve had a brand new Town Car with all four wheels in the air…

What do you exactly consider a "lesser" car..... a camry or an accord?

I work for Miller, and it works the same for us. Whenever someone gets a can where the tab breaks off, or the bottle is deformed or cracked, they blame Miller even though the supplier sends us faulty material that we could not have possibly found ourselves.

I wouldn't write-off Ford for this one.

Ford is bad, but Chrysler is even worse. I am amazed that they still have cars on the road with the crap they throw in.

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

I'm sure it is a supplier problem. I'm sure it's a supplier problem stemming from Ford's repeated, forced price reductions. You can only make something so cheap before it becomes unsafe.http://www.mark8.org/users/sleeper/kwaliteeee.jpg

Didn't think of that...I know at Miller we tend to go for quality suppliers rather than cheaper ones.
