Ice/Snow Storm

It took me nearly 3 hours to get home today. It is only a 9 mile drive.

The temperature during the day dropped from 45 in the 20's. The storm that was initially rain changed into freezing rain then snow.

The first problem was getting the door of the car open. the driver door would not budge, but I finnaly got the passenger side of the Mark VIII open after 10 minutes.

There were 100's of accidents in the New York metropolitan area according to the radio. Most of the highways had traffic at a standstill due to spinouts and accidents.

When I saw that the highway was backed up all the way to the entrance ramp and the highway itself not moving, I took the local streets. It was not much better.

I saw lots of accidents. I saw cars slide off the crown of the road and then could not get going again, because they had no traction. I saw a Mazda Miata despirately trying to rev his engine trying to get moving again. He was just spinning his wheels. Lots of cars were stopped and abandoned, even with no visible damage. The most common car to be abandoned tonight was Lexus. I counted five of them.

You get bored when you are travelling an average of 3 miles per hour and are stopped most of the time.

My thanks to an uneventful trip goes to my Michelin Pilot Alpin snow tires. The traction control light hardly ever came on.

Now you know why, after over 25 yrs, I finally stopped commuting 30 miles from LI to NYC everyday and moved my office to my house... my commute is now all of 4 seconds! In my PJs no less!

i was glad i didnt have class today. although the jeep wouldve done fine. i just sat inside and watched the snow come down sideways on top of this windy new milford hill i live on.

Happy I took today off to study for midterms. The amount of snow was minimal, it is the rain and snow that get compacted, and then turns to ice with freezing rain that makes this weather the worse to dive in. Right now it is very windy.

RE: Ice/Snow Storm

Last night it would have mattered if you had eight-wheel drive. You could move faster than the traffic allowed. Traffic in recent snow-storms was not as bad as last night.

Very true Alex. What really gets me are the people that have lived in the northeast all their lives and still cannot drive in the bad weather.

For Example, this year I was driving the Mark home from Albany and it was snowing really bad. I was on the thruway and going about 35mph. Next thing I see is a guy in a volvo and a guy in a Tahoe fly by me. Guess what about 1 mile down the road the Volvo nailed the guardrail and totaled his car. The front end was gone. Shortly after that I see the Tahoe went off the road and got stuck on hill. I still madde it through both sections and all the way home without a single problem. They had better setups for the bad weather, but my rear drive Mark made it and they didn't. It's people like these that cause most of the problems in this type of weather.

78 degrees, zero humidity, both windows AND sunroof open all the way home...avg speed 64 mph. I even took the long way home, just to enjoy the beautiful green grass, and smell the sweet scent of spring.

Why you Yanks make fun of us Californians is beyond me.

p.s. I am wearing shorts today. :p :p :p

If anyone's planning a trip to northern California, March and especially April are the best months - it all turns brown after that...
