Yeah, you really cant hear much fun stuff anyhow.

However, I wonder why they are broadcasted online, and publicly? Is it because the reason you mentioned?

Its a public channel. The public has the right to listen if they desire. If we start swearing and stuff like that on the radio we can be fined. We have some channels that are probably illegal to listen to just because of sensitive material. We call those tac channels. If you want the good stuff, just go to applebees. There is always some dumb rookie leaving his radio on the table after dinner..............

Adam, my county here in GA voted yesteerday on a "Special Local Option Sales Tax" and approved it.
One of the items to now implement is a joint city/county 800 MHZ trunked communication system, will have 3 repeater towers spread throughout the county and is supposed to be guaranteed by Motorola to give 95% coverage.
I have a scanner in my shop that I usually switch on while I'm there, as my shop is away from my home and in the "Hood", and it's good to know what's going on around you! Has come in handy on more than one occasion.
I realize that my scanner will be prety much obsolete when this system is installed. We voted down the past 2 SPLOSTs for rejection of a boondoggle that wasn't included this time.
But back then I was assured by the local Radio Shack manager that they now had scanners to work on trunked systems. Just require a more complex setup, and of course, more money.
Are these "tac" channels you mentioned part of a trunked system? An adjacent county, Fayette, apparently has a partially trunked system, as I hear the dispatcher instruct units to respond on "tac 1" or "tac 2", etc.

With the right know how, any frequency can be monitered. Some are just easier than others to find. Tac could mean a bunch of different things depending where you live. It may be a common frequency heard by all officers, or it could be a special frequency that only some are given. Trunking systems are acutally old news. Been out for at least 15 years that I know of. They are very overrated. Its just a matter of time before we go to some sort of cellular type system. Trunking will be very easy for you due to its age. Even a simple hyper scan system that picks up 800 mhz will work. It scans so fast that when the trunk system switches to a new frequency the scanner will pick it up right away.

I used to have a scanner in my cruiser at a past agency. The most fun I ever had was when my scanner picked up the cordless phone conversation of a local drug dealer.
