Is it worth it?

You ever wonder why on earth you put up with your vehicles? Is it worth it?

My '93 Lincoln has been in the body shop. Last week, I was installing a couple suspension braces and noticed two brackets on the IRS subframe were rusted bad and should be replaced.

On Saturday, I find the tailshaft housing on my Mark VII is cracked. I park it while waiting on parts.

On Sunday, no less, I'm working on the Mark VIII and discover the bolt holding the bracket up through the isolator will not come out.

Monday evening, I end up using a hole saw through the underbody frame to gain access to the stripped nut. After using a torch on the nut, the bolt still will not come out of the isolator mount. An hour with the air chisel is what it took to finally extricate everything. I order the parts the air chisel destroyed.

After work today, I'm on my way to work on the other side of the IRS on the Mark VIII, and the F250 starts missing, bad. It's going to have to go into the garage most likely for an issue with the injector harness on one side. The other side had been replaced(under warranty) 30-40K miles ago, and I've been waiting for this one. At least this is the company truck.

Three vehicles down. :B

Is it worth it? :(

RE: Is it worth it?

I think for my next daily drive I will get a lease. This way every thing will be covered under a bumper to bumper warrantee and I just have to pay for gas and oil changes other then the payments.

RE: Is it worth it?

haha.. thats the reason my Mark hit the road! It cost more to keep it going than buying a new car.

Now i got a cavalier for a daily driver (cheap as it gets for replacement parts) I replaced the rotors a few weeks ago... $13 a rotor!! thats like a large pizza

I cannot begin to say how much was spent in repairs on the mark. Although im sure many have spent the same!!

yes. and if you doubt me...ask yourself...'why am I reading his response, on a message board, where thousands of people come together socially to bond, and share a common thread...a Lincoln Mark VIII...a car.....a car."

you will come to the same conclusion I do....the car is worth it.

The Lincoln Mark VIII...it isnt just a car...it's a lifestyle...most of us either have one(or more) will have one, or have had one...either way...we're still here....because of.....the car.

RE: Is it worth it?

you know what driller killer; no it's not worth it. This past weekend I was fixing a nice bike I found next to a dumpster many months ago and concluded that bikes were the greatest invention to mankind. You can go 5-10 miles in under 30 minutes, you can sometimes go a 1-3 miles quicker than a car (having to start it, stop signs, speed limits, etc.) Think about it, when something happens to your car (at least with me) you're just absolutely devastated and feel like viciously attacking someone or something. Cars take the power out of your control.Sometimes a single repair exceeds the initial cost of the vehicle. One time I was jaw jacking to one of my friends about having a repair shop that would work with the government for low income people to fix cars at an affordable price, just said it for the hell of it but he seemed to think I was serious because a month or 2 later he was telling me about what he was learning about cars to start fixing them.

RE: Is it worth it?

It seems to me that when one of my cars breaks, that is the time another one breaks.

If reliable transportation was the top priority, we would not be driving 8 to 13 year old cars.

For the money and considering what it is, I still don't think you can beat a Mark VIII.

RE: Is it worth it?

I had the F250 towed to the dealer. Eyeballed a nice looking Mark LT while I was there. :9

Anyways, looks like the Mark VIII is coming together after countless problems at the shop and I have a line on parts for the VII. In a few days, all will be well. :)

RE: Is it worth it?

I'd have to do some pretty good 'lobbying' to talk the boss into a Mark LT for $47K! I'm actually holding out for the new twin-turbo PowerStroke. }(

Is it worth it? :(

In one word Yes, All the little sidestepping and mini hurdles I call them always pay out on the big end in personal satisfaction and pure adrenaline when the car runs just right and you break a new record for yourself.
I picture each of my cars like 3 plants in pots sitting on a table. Some you just keep pouring water (money)in them and it leaks down through the dirt and out holes at bottom. (the never ending repair cars in my case)(time to consider replacing the plant). While others take the water and produce wonderfull flowering stems (the fun and performance of owning them they produce).
Once the soil is saturated and plant is happy, it runs great and brings lots of joy to look at it. It needs little water to keep at it's potential. Then when the soil starts to dry up it cries for more water to keep it running its best.
My 2 cents on it are, not all plants produce flowers, they were always meant to be a tough shrub(as in the case with my truck). But from whence came flowers, will once again ;)...keep watering your plants.

haha Ok, i have my white jacket ready for anyone that wants to give me a ride to the institution. lol

RE: Is it worth it?

Yes, it's worth it. I still enjoy the car as much as when it was "new to me". They are sure something different to drive, especially around here. I can easily drive a week or more without seeing another one. Last week, a lady asked me if it was a Cougar :+

RE: Is it worth it?

sorry JP...but I was just browsing through your "member's rides" thread (AGAIN!) and happened upon a response, from you...to me.

all I can say is...you answered your own question a long time ago ;)

your OWN exact words:

"Some deliberately planned, some just upgraded with repairs. Some cheap, some not, all worth it. "

No more questions, your honor....your witness, counselor!
