anyone have a cheap way to keep a 9 crown vic from shifting to second gear when i have it in first?
[/div]

If that car has the same 4R70W tranny we do, then putting the shifter in "1" will keep it in first gear.

RE: holding first gear?

Ding Ding Ding!!!
Absolutely correct!!!

No matter how much you want to grenade your engine or balloon your torque convertor, the PCM will not allow the transmission to remain in Manual First.

Based primarily upon information from CKP(Engine RPM), ECT(Coolant Temperature), TFT(Trans Fluid Temperature),and OSS(Output Shaft Speed), if the PCM believes catastrophic component failure is imminent and the driver is too dimwitted to get the transmission out of Manual First, the PCM protects his car and forces 2nd Gear.

If he's really hell-bent on breaking something and manually pulls First Gear at higher speeds, the PCM will not allow the downshift until 28-30MPH or a safe RPM window.

Why would you want to do this?

What possible benefit is there in holding First after the PCM has decided it's dangerous?

RE: holding first gear?

Wow!

A'99 Crown Victoria for dirt oval?

Now I'm really curious. Tell me more! What sort of speeds will you hit? Why do you need to lock First Gear in?

RE: holding first gear?

its a short track most of us hit more then 50 goin into the corners, using metric impalas and turbo 350s in first gear. no cages. knock out the windows and all the plastic lights and such cut off the exhaust weld, wire, or chain the doors shut, and thats it. i guess if i have to ill reuse my impala from last year and put a chey motor and trans in the interceptor and use ot for a derby car. really want to get it to hold first gear though without doin a manual valve body

You can program the chip to hold first.

I got mine reburned so it actually hits the rev limiter (6500) and still doesn't shift.

RE: holding first gear?

That's by far the simplest way to override the PCM's forced upshift programming. You could tune it for better low speed/bottom end torque at the same time.

RE: holding first gear?

figured that was gonna be the answer. what do i need one of them hand held programmers and a blank chip or should i just order one from someone

It's a toss up...they both cost about the same (tuner or chip).

The tuner lets you DIY as much as you want, while a burned chip from someone like Lonnie would turn out better for whatever your application might be.
