Some 1/4 mile times

Hi everyone,

I got what is the best 1/4 mile time I can muster. After 16 runs my best was 14.57. That is shifting Manual

Slightly dissapointing considering I have a 94 MK8 with:
3:73 with posi
2 1/2 full Duel exhaust
80MM mas air with K&N cone filter
Dennis Chip with recommended
180 Stat and
Plugs

P.S. How do I post pictures I have hosted on another site.

Thank you
karl

RE: Some 1/4 mile times

Your time is fine. It's a heavy car with a small engine. You didn't post your 60' time or mph.

To post pictures just put in the URL for the picture.

RE: Some 1/4 mile times

Karl - those big heavy rims probably slowed you down a bit, at least a tenth or two.

What was the temperature when you were making your runs. If you didn't already know that makes a big difference in these cars.

You also should not have to manually shift with a chip?

Did you brake torque off the line at all with the gears?

My 1993 did 14.3 with just an exhaust, but it was 40 degrees out!

RE: Some 1/4 mile times

Them rims slowed you way down. If they're bigger than stock, it's negating your gear change, plus they're heavier. Figure 10 pounds of wheel is worth AT LEAST 30 on the car.

RE: Some 1/4 mile times

They are not neccesarrily negating the gear change, Dave.If he went smaller with the tires then it is the same.
There you go giving bad info again.LOL

RE: Some 1/4 mile times

Well if you go big enough with the rim, it doesn't really matter how small you go with the tires. But you're right, depending on the profile of the tires, he may not be affecting the rpm per MPH ratio.

RE: Some 1/4 mile times

The only way you could go SO big that you couldn't get a tire with a small enough aspect ratio is if you went with a 22 or larger.

RE: Some 1/4 mile times

That's a great picture, beautiful car, I love what you've done with it! :)

Dang,I must have the slowest 93 out there!I've only run the 1/8,and the best i could do is a 9.68@75.98.That is w/chip and 4.10's.I have 0 low end tq = 0 tire spin off line, and best 60 ft is 2.36.

True, but Steve (Trapp) was running 18's with tires that gave him an overall bigger ratio than stock. And the tires on those rims don't look all that low-profile.

One way to figure this out:

Karl, what size tires are those?

RE: Some 1/4 mile times

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the feedback

First, for more picture check my Cardomain site

The temp was about 77F. I usually torqued against the brake about 1500 RPM.

I know I shouldnt need to manually shift but I could only get 14.69 in "D"

My rims are 17 inches with 255 70 I think the overall size seems about the same. I never thought of the weight before. Now I wish I had made some runs with my snowflakes.

My cowl is a 2 1/2 inch summit universal unit. Me and my uncle put it on and It turned out pretty good (at least I think.)

RE: Some 1/4 mile times

FYI those rims/tires weight approx 55lbs!!! I have the same ones and thats what they tip the scales at. That is about 18LBS more than a OEM lacy spoke per wheel. I bet you lose a good .25 sec in a 1/4 over those monsters. They look kool though

RE: Some 1/4 mile times

If you have 255/70r17's your tire is WAY too tall, thus almost negating your rear gears. The stock size is a 225/60r16. You went with a "plus 1" fit, which means you went up "one" size in rim diameter. When you do this, you MUST go down in tire aspect ratio.(side wall height) i.e. 225/60r16, = 225/55r 17 which is close to a 225/50r17. The SLR or Static Loaded radius is the key. WTH is a SLR? the bottom half of the tire, or the half with the load. Thats the part that "rolls" on the ground. Therefore, if you make the hole in the center of the tire bigger, you MUST make the height of the sidewall smaller. Just picture a doughnut. If the doughnut is stood on its side, and you measured its height. Then, make the hole in the middle bigger. The height shouldnt change. Well by putting a 70 series tire on a 17" rim... you grew the tire about 3 inches, or 1.5 inches SLR, thus changing your overall gearing. Result? look at your time slip. What you really needed was a 235/55R17, or 235/50R17... heck most guys go with 245/50R17. But a 70 series tire on 17's..aka truck tire!

RE: Some 1/4 mile times

Either way that is wayyyyyyyy of base for those mod's.

Ken Kropac went in the 14.30's with a TON of miles with nothing more then an exhaust?
