Microsoft Auto Oh no......

Apparently there was an announcement last week that Microsoft had released its latest and greatest operating system, MS Auto for the automotive sector. Apparently a number of manufacturers have grabbed the bait. I can see it now, to turn off your your car, Press Start.

I can see it now......

You hit the brakes, a prompt shows up "Are You Sure You Want To Enable The Brakes? Please select: Yes, No, or Cancel" :)

Before you make jokes - read this passage from an upcoming owners manual in a glovebox near you:

"Sorry Mr. Salesman, sorry Bill Ford, i think I'll keep my Mark VIII rather than submit to a privacy intrusion by a large multinational corporation and/or government officials. Have fun in the unemployment line."

Man, you guys are hilarious, im glad I found this board because Cal banned me from the other one like a year ago, I like the mature humour i see coming out of the mouths of fellow Lincoln lovers.

RE: Microsoft Auto Oh no......

Can you believe it? This is not made up. This is text from a real owner's manual - yet to be printed.

I was FLOORED when I saw this. (Obviously - for those who know where I live - you can guess the kind of work I do.)

RE: Microsoft Auto Oh no......

I just tripped on this post and thought I'd add to it. (Finally, something computer related that I've heard about!) I am considering purchasing one of the devises that can read the information stored on the computers in cars in crash and near-crash events. The new computers in cars keeps this record like a "black box" on an airplane. The new reader can recover this info.

I was told that this is already possible with new Ford and GM cars. The imports will be required to do it in a few years. It would be helpful in accidents, but would be like any other "search" and will require a warrant or consent. (That will probably be tested in court soon.)
It could also be used when a police car is involved in a wreck, which would open the department up to lawsuits considering how we drive. I think that last little fact will keep us from getting one of these "scanners" any time soon.
The moral of the story is that this is already available. Apparently the computers in some cars are already storing this info.

RE: Microsoft Auto Oh no......

GM and Ford have been doing this for a few years now, just not on all cars.

RE: Microsoft Auto Oh no......

there is an editorial in Car and Driver last month... I believe it is all GM cars since 1993 and only selected Fords..
