AOL 9.0 taking up too much RAM?

RE: AOL 9.0 taking up too much RAM?

Ahahahahahahahahaha, she's using Windows ME and AOL? What a dumbass. Tell her to upgrade to a real OS (Redhat 9.0 or the like) and to get an ISP that doesn't come with any BS software.

RE: AOL 9.0 taking up too much RAM?

Guys, she's not a geek. She checks e-mail and plays solitaire, then, like a normal person, she sits in front of the TV or reads. She did say if any of you would like to set this all up for her and show her, she'd welcome it, but until then, she's just looking for a simple, cheap and easy fix. ;-)

Oh, and she does appreciate the info provided herein, she's going to check some of it out but it may not be right away.

I'll amend my list...

Windows Me

Bad company :(.

RE: AOL 9.0 taking up too much RAM?

I'm simple,cheap and easy.And I just happen to be recently single.Is she?:p

We need a smiley which reflects me hitting my head against a wall.

The answer is: No, No and No. And Yes.

RE: AOL 9.0 taking up too much RAM?

I was only really asking if she was single. That was funny though.
Trixie, you know us both. Are we compatible?

RE: AOL 9.0 taking up too much RAM?

Nah, Chris I don't think so...

BTW, I just got home to realize that I am running ME on a Compaq with AOL. Go figure.

Don't call me ... ;)

Well, at least you drive a Mark!

RE: AOL 9.0 taking up too much RAM?

Hi Trixie

Microsoft ME has a huge memory leak in it , Microsoft never bothered to fix it because XP came out right after..As much as I dint like AOL in this case the problem may be her operating system..I see you run the same combo , do you find that if you are working for a long time on the computer , it slows up or locks up? then to fix you need to reboot? then its good for awhile only to do again later..If so that is MEs problem and AOL doesn't help ..

RE: AOL 9.0 taking up too much RAM?

Hi John, thanks. No, I don't usually have a problem. Yeah, every once in a while AOL acts up, and sometimes screws everything else up, but that's not very often. I don't really get a slow down either. I haven't asked her yet if her problems fixed, I'll have to remember to do that.

RE: AOL 9.0 taking up too much RAM?

Take a look at your computer tower. There should be a sticker on it. It should have some operating systems listed. If, by any chance, it says "NT" or "2000" or "XP" you could upgrade the OS and I insist that you do. If not you are stuck with "ME" or regular "Win98". NT and up have a more stable file system, which means considerable less crashes if any and longer run times between reboots. The only problem would be finding someone out there to do the work for you. If you want to mail me the tower I would be glad to stage it for you.

RE: AOL 9.0 taking up too much RAM?

Oh, that's so sweet Christo. Actually, we already have another OS running on this computer, I just didn't like it. It had something to do with my son changing the resolution and stuff, and I'm blind and he's not, so I've really been happy with ME. I have XP at work and I really don't like it.

RE: AOL 9.0 taking up too much RAM?

If she is low on physical memory (the amount actually installed) then installing a pig like AOL9 may have filled her hard drive up to the point where windows is no longer able to effectively use hard drvie space to swap out memory (virtual memory). She should uninstall all OLD versions of AOL and clean out her "Temporary Internet Files". probably a defrgament of the hard drive wouldn't hurt either.

RE: AOL 9.0 taking up too much RAM?

Thanks David. I think all the ideas which are "free" are gonna be her first options. :)

RE: AOL 9.0 taking up too much RAM?

OK Trixie,
Here is a freebe try , goto Start then to Run and type MSConfig ,
a window will open goto "Startup" there you will find all the programs that are running in the background ...to the left you will find a check box next to each entry . If you slide to the right you will see the EXE program that is starting . if you take the "X" out of the box the program will not start the next time the computer is rebooted , put the "X" back it will start again .. Some you will recognize others you wont ...If you are not sure leave the check in , don't remove "systray " and AOL or you wont be able to test AOL..take the check out of all the programs you recognize and reboot see if AOL still slows down the machine ...If it does not then you have too many programs running in the background on her machine and you will need to stop some of them from starting at bootup..You can still start these from the Desktop or "Start , Programs".If you find this stops the problem then get back to me and ill help you sort through the running programs and shut down what you don't need runnining at startup..Also make sure there is at least 500 meg of free space on thre "C" drive for windows swapfile.
