Flash Player

OK guys, time to see who's the best computer geek in town. I am running XP Pro on a AMD XP chip and IE. Have 512 Meg RAM and for some unknown reason, have lost the ability to view any Flash sites. I have talked with a MicroSoft tech for about 2 hours while trying out differt things and now have spend 2 days conversing with a Macromedia tech via email and STILL can not view any Flash files. I have tried un-installing it and re-installing while in SAFE mode. No go. The only thing I haven't tried is un-installing XP Pro and re-installing the operating system...and I really don't want to go there. Anyone have any bright ideas? Oh yeah, there WAS a time with this setup that it worked fine. No, I don't recall when it stopped working or what I had done to make it stop, otherwise I wouldn't be asking this.

RE: Flash Player

What version of IE?

Does it Work in Netscape?

Do other plug-ins work?

Are you trying to open Flash files (.fla) or Flash movies (.swf)?

What did you uninstall? Flash or IE?

If you drag an swf into IE, what happens?

It could be that the swf extension has been associated with another app, or something else took over the player file association, then that app got nixed...Just a guess...

RE: Flash Player

1.IE is version 6.whatever...I keep up with all of MS's updates.

2.I've never used Netscape...don't know, but I'll try it sometime soon.

3. I've tried both...neither work. But it's strange, Macromedia's Shockwave works fine!

4. I uninstalled both at different times, reloaded, no joy. Tried un-installing Flash and rebooting into Safe Mode and installing Flash, no joy there either.

5. No, haven't tried dragging an swf into IE... will let you know if it works.

6. Good thought, I'll check the file associations too...no one has thought of that one yet and it should have been one of the first.Duh!

Thanks Kale...lemme go check on these things. Will let you know how I make out.

RE: Flash Player

OK...I downloaded Netscape, installed it and found that I can NOT run any Flash content using it either.

I attemped to look at file associations involving fla and swf extentions, but since I can NOT install the flash player, I can't make the correct association. Windows won't let you assign an association to a non-existant program!!! Kind of a catch 22, eh? So, my problem is: Why can't I install the Flash Player? I'm stumped. Next?

RE: Flash Player

Well you shouldn't need to install the Flash Player with IE 6, Flash support comes standard and won't appear in your plug-ins folder. What happens if you drag and drop an swf into IE?

You should be able to associate the swf with IE. Flash really only needs to be associated with the actual Flash Authoring (.fla) file.

Are you trying to view different swf movies or just one in particular? Have you downloaded and installed the latest Flash 7 Player?

Something sounds really wierd. Maybe it is a setting somewhere that is not allowing active content? Or maybe it is a virus. I found [link:www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/swflfm926.html|this] but it doesn't sound like what you are experiencing..

RE: Flash Player

Kale, I CANNOT install the Flash Player!! That is the problem....I contacted MicroSoft and we went through numberous attempts to un-install - re-install the Flash Player, but it WILL NOT INSTALL! I can drag and drop 100 swf files and if I can not install the Flash Player, it won't show the file or movie or flash file. Check out the Macromedia web site that has the latest Flash Player free download. In troubleshooting the Flash player it has you un-install the file or program and then download the latest version ( 7.something now) and when it installs, it will (in less than a few seconds using a cable modem)show a screen with a Flash demo in it. All I ever see is an empty box with a little colored square in the upper left hand corner. What's weird, says MicroSoft, is I have Shockwave and I have no problem with that....All I can see to do now is to uninstall XP and reload...and I really don't want to do that...Too many programs on this HD that I would have to reload so the Windows Registery will be up to date. I've already tried to remove IE and used the original XP install disc to reload IE...of course that was no help. I'm out of ideas. That's why I've asked for help. Was hoping that someone else has had the same problem. Thanks for the help tho.

RE: Flash Player

Kale, Ya know, after digesting what you said is starting to make sense to me. I am not trying to view a Flash Movie or such, what I cannot do is see certain Flash Inserts on the net, such as a news feature on my home page at comcast.net. They use flash to show some items in their news section on page 1....and I don't see 'em. They also use Flash to show other segments in their pages. All I get to see is that horrid tiny box with 3 colors (or colored shapes) that shows when an item won't load. So, it IS possible I just have something not allowing the (Flash) program to load and show the item. I really don't have ANY swf files to drag into IE to try...ummm, I guess I should do a search for swf files before I make a statement like that, but if I have any, I don't know where they came from. I'll play arounf some more and see what I can dig up. Thanks again.

OH, I use Norton Anti-Virus and I allow it to check my computer every Friday night and I've never seen it find anything. I checked to see if they have that virus in it's inventory, and they do. I've never seen the evidence of that virus, so I doubt if I have it. I'd almost be happy to see it as THAT I can get rid of....

RE: Flash Player

way to go Kale
I cant believe that many hours with Microsoft and Macromedia didn't come up with that conclusion.....You cant just, always read it off a screen , sometimes you have to know what you are talking about...
