Pop up help

[font color=blue]Scott: Why should he delete Ad Aware?[/font]For some reason, it just seems like Ad Aware is a magnet for spyware. I can't explain it. I had pesky popup issues when I used both Ad Aware and Spybot. Now that I use the Google toolbar popup blocker + Spybot, I have no issues.I think it's a karma thing! :D
[/div]

Maybe its just the popup blocker. :D

As long as you're careful and scan once in awhile, you should be fine, just dont surf malicous porn or warez (Read: questionable) sites.

It seems I'm still getting a pop up every once in a while. The pop up stopper I started useing is still stopping pop ups.It tells me everytime it stops something.???????????

RE: Pop up help

Allright you look good to go, looks like all the offending files have been removed. If you did a scan with Trojan Hunter, and it found nothing, then you can go ahead and un-install it if you want. At this point, any pop-ups you get should be from normal surfing, do you get pop-ups when like at this site or something? Getting pop-ups is normal from some sites, it's the way of the web. Just make sure you disabled the "messenger" service and ran "windowsupdate". At this point, all I can tell you to do as a preventative measure would be to install "SpyWareBlaster", the link is in my last post to you and run Ad aware and Spybot twice a month or so.

And pat yourself on the back with a job well done. ;)

edit: Please run Windowsupdate if you havent.

RE: Pop up help

I was already up to date on windows.

The pop up stopper I started using from http://www.panicware.com/

is still popping up every once in a while when I switch to a different window.
It blocks it but It has a little square in the lower right hand of the screen that comes up and then disappears and tells me it has just blocked a pop up???

You think I should get rid of it and see what happens?

RE: Pop up help

Oh, and the trojanhunter found 6-7 different ones. I cleaned them and ran it again and it found one more.I cleaned it, and now I'm going to run it one more time today.

RE: Pop up help

Ok, as you already know, just run it again, and then run Ad aware and Spy bot again, just to make sure.

Have you done a full scan with Norton?

Just install SpywareBlaster to immunize you from spyware, and get rid of that pop-up program, try another one, like the Google Toolbar: http://toolbar.google.com/ and get rid of the Yahoo toolbar: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303047

It's less intrusive than the popup blocker you bave, it doesnt annoy you with notifications.

You wont be needing a popup blocker for long, Service Pack 2 for XP is due out in the next month, and it will include a built-in popup blocker for Internet Explorer.

edit: ca-ching, I just thought of something, should of told you earlier, go to the task manager, and kill everything running that you can except for crss.exe, explorer.exe, lsass.exe, services.exe, smss.exe, svchost.exe, System, System Idle Process, taskmgr.exe and winlogon.exe, Before you run spybot, adaware, or trojan hunter again.

RE: Pop up help

Install RegCleaner" from here: http://home.comcast.net/~dohcmark8/regcleaner.exe

When you run it, go-to Tools > Registry Cleanup > Do Them All > then use your mouse to highlight everything it finds (hold left button and move cursor over everything, make sure it highlights everything), and hit "remove selected".

You should have a very clean system now.

RE: Pop up help

Alright, I just did all that. It seems to be fine now.

I got rid of that stopper and I havent gotten any more pop ups yet.

I think the one I was using was telling me I had a pop up when I really didnt that way they could sell me their FULL software that would get rid of it, and not just block it.

I cant thank you enough for all your help.

HAHAHA!!All you had to do was do a System Restore and all that crap would have went bye-bye.Try using this browser from now on.http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
[/div]

::uh::
Nope, system restore doesnt wipe out everything, all the trojans and hijackers stay there.

RE: Pop up help

[div class="dcquote"][strong]Quote[/strong]
Worked for me
[/div]

It depends on how extreme the case is, In your case I imagine that since all you did was system restore you still have traces of that crap still on your system just waiting to come back to haunt you.

I've dealt with several hundred machines, and I've tried the system restore thing; It doesnt clean everything, some files are still there, all system restore does in essence is keep a copy of *essential* system files and the registry.

RE: Pop up help

I've since built a new computer, but SR did stop the spyware. I downloaded a crack for a program, clicked the wrong .exe file (I thought it was the keygen .exe) then as soon as I knew it my computer was toast. I tried uninstalling them, running Ad-Aware, etc. I finally did a System Restore and it all went back to normal.

I guess it depends on the situation.

Sys restore just restored your registry and boot files in that case. Be careful what you download, you should have an AV program.

RE: Pop up help

Just for future reference, don't depend solely on pop-up blockers to get rid of pop-ups. If you've got spyware on your system, all the blockers will do is hide the symptoms. Think of it like this: A person who's terminally ill may take morphine to eliminate the pain. But the disease is still there and eventually it'll get you. ;(

That's a terrible analogy Mark. :B
