You know how every car has a story?

I've been looking in the past for a capable replacement for the wife's daily driver(2000 Mercury Sable LS Premium) and this is how I stumbled onto this...

It started last week. The faithful F250 Powerstroke needed tires. No rush, just getting low on tread. I had the purchasing guy at work start shopping. Lo and behold he found some my size and brand on sale at a local vendor, so the next day he had my truck sent down and have the new tires installed. When it returned, I was admiring how much tread they really did have when I suggested we get the front end alignment checked to keep from trashing a new set of tires. No problem, he had an appointment made for the following day and the truck went to a local shop for an alignment. An hour or so later they called and said it couldn't be aligned because of worn ball joints. Our mechanics were swamped and I didn't want to wait and risk being called out of town on assignment with a front end that needed worked on. As a last resort we called the local dealer and had an appointment for the next morning. It took all day but they finally did get the ball joints replaced and the front end aligned.

Meanwhile, back at work, I had my co-worker bring in his Grandpa's '96 Town Car I had been eyeing to buy. Between phone calls, meetings and other real work, I managed to give it a thorough going over at our shop, including a test drive. A late meeting ran over that Friday evening and my truck still sat at the dealer in town. No problem, I took home another truck until I could pick up mine.

The next day, late in the morning, my wife was returning from the mall when she called and I told her to hurry by and pick me up so she could drop me off so I could pick up my truck. No problem, a few minutes later I was at the dealer walking out to the truck from the service department. My wife had stopped and parked next to the truck waiting on me when I knocked on her window glass and she rolled down the window. "Let's take a look around while we're here." I said.

The lot is actually kind of small as FLM dealers go, so it didn't take long. We didn't have long to take either, as we had a wedding to attend that afternoon. But besides a 1997 white 'Cobra' Mustang convertible, all we seen that drew our attention was this...

Long story not quite so long, a while later we had given the salesman our final offer and had already relayed our needing to be at a wedding. We stood outside waiting for him to return from his manager with another counter-offer, when he opened the door and said "What time's the wedding?"

Within another hour the Sable was history and we drove home in this...

I introduce you to the "Blue Jewel".

RE: 2002 Blue Jewel

Well needless to say, the wedding was a smash. Quite a few people were eyeing the 'new car' driving to the event...

A eye catcher for sure as the 2002 Lincoln Town Car caught the sun and reflected it brilliantly from it's metallic blue finish.

Shamefully, I know very little of these late-model Town Cars, but I can honestly say this one is a jewel to behold. All Town Cars are comfort creatures, but something special about this one caught our eye.

JP, I'll tell you where you really scored...you bought the "last of the good", for one. The 2003 T-car is a POS. The 96-97 were the best, and the 98's were a "first model year" runt. But from 99-2002, they were awesome.

You got the rare wheels, the wood grain wheel with stereo controls, and the nice interior color. Nice adjustable pedal location option too, huh?

I LOVE it!!!

BTW, if you need anything, or any help with it along the way, I have a few goodies laying around. I dont have anything "model year" specific, as we had no 2002's. We had quite a few 00-01's, and then we foolishly bought some 2003's(junk).

These cars alos warm up to Mercon V quite nicely, as most shops still dump III into them.

anyway, if you plan to get the window tinted, be sure to show the tint guy how well your stereo works BEFORE tint, as for some reason, the 98-02's had problems with metalic tint, and radio interference. Just a FYI.

Very nice job... makes that 1996 T-Car you checked out seem like an old "classic" car, huh?

Oh, wait until you get to change a headlight bulb...best design I've seen in a long time. 3 minutes, tops! keep an eye on any mositure in the headlight housings... they like to grow mold. Of course, this was on our 300k+++ mile cars!

Amazingly similar in a interior way, and I never minded the 'squared off' versions at all. If the '96 would've been a Pearl tri-coat, I would probably be driving it now. It was a sweet lo-miler that was obviously maintained well and garage-kept even though a good detail inside and out was in order. I swear, with it up on jackstands, you had to 'search' for any signs of rust on the underbody... put my '93 to shame. Very, very little sign of daily wear and tear. I had a tough time coming up with arguments to justify my low-ball offer. It will make someone a fine ride.

The '02 simply sold itself. The metallic blue paint, whatever the official color, is eye candy for sure. Exactly what I wanted to someday paint the '93 Mark VIII. The metallic just 'pops' right out in the sun all the while looking very dark in the shade and almost black at night. The ample chrome accents simply enhance the overall exterior. The wheels are gorgeous for a stock wheel IMHO. Not too blingy, and a nice 'deep dish' look for the generous wheel wells.

Once inside, it is simply a dream. The leather is so, so supple. The seats can comfortably position you with plenty of travel in all directions. The adjustable pedals are a plus that I had become accustomed to from the Sable. Driver controls and instrument layout is superb. The rear seating is astoundingly luxurious and roomy. It's no wonder these cars are ordered as limos.

To drive it is a real treat. It is virtual silence inside the passenger cabin. While it may be no burn-out machine, the 4.6L SOHC provides ample push while the suspension literally isolates you from the real-world roads we all know today. Handling the big boat though is not what you might expect. It doesn't sway or bounce as the land yachts of yesteryear. It adeptly maneuvers through the parking lots, city traffic and highway lane changes.

Yes, it's true. The disease of being a Lincolnholic is incurable but treatment is available! :D :D :D

Hit the traction button in the glove box and you may find a burnout or two in that new ride...

Very nice car, I always loved that body style... very art deco IMO, I think the new ones are very sharp as well, but lack the same flair...

I'm sure the pics don't do that color justice... and BTW you got my favorite TC wheels ever...

Looks great John!!! I bet that baby floats down the road....be careful youdont fall asleep while driving....I am sure it is that comfortable :7 Good Luck!!

RE: 2002 Blue Jewel

Like BadSax says, the pics do not do the color justice. He's probably seen that color before. According to an online search, it is a True Blue Pri Metallic Clearcoat? I'd have to check the paint code. Wharever it is, I like. :)

Bring it to Carlisle and we'll judge it for you ... lol.

The wife would have to drive it. That means she doesn't get to nap on the drive up. That means she'll be very... well we'll see... ;)
