Dear Friends of LOD:

As I was reviewing the pictures of my Burgundy 1996 Diamond Anniversary Edition here on the LOD site and as I continued to read about how many of you were enjoying your Mark VIII's, I must confess that I was being tempted to keep this beauty and sell my like-new Tundra, instead.

However, God has a way of guiding our paths sometimes in no uncertain terms. Sadly,on the way home from work this past Friday, 02-02-07, a large chevy pickup with a utility box flew through a red light and slammed my baby to extinction. By the grace of God, I walked away from the wreck virtually unharmed. Make no mistake: this was indeed a miracle, as he was moving easily at 25 mph or better with his large, heavy truck. If he had struck me five feet further back, on my driver's door, I surely would not be sitting here writing this.

His right front bumper pummeled into my left front fender just forward of the left front wheel. I was spun around and brought along his right side where his truck proceeded to rip up my left flank and tear up my left rear quarter. Thankfully, he, too, was unhurt. My gorgeous Mark VIII, however, is another matter. A testimony to how well this car is built is that every system not directly smashed, INCLUDING the CD changer, still works! However, I was hit with such force the radiator support was shifted about eight inches to the right, so much so that the upper radiator hose popped off the nipple because it wouldn't stretch far enough. My brand new Bosch Battery (1-week old!) was cracked open when it was pushed up against the engine. The left tie rod is now V-shaped, instead of straight (yet the wheel is not visibly bent!).

Having been an auto wrecker worker in my younger days, I am sorely tempted to keep this treasure trove of parts in my backyard for freshening out a possible future Mark VIII. However, my wife and budget will not permit this luxury. Moreover, I am still waiting to hear from the other fellow's insurance company. It should be a total, totally paid by his insurance company. We'll see.

Thank you for letting me participate on this great website. Rest assured, I'll be watching ya'll in the days to come.

Very sorry to hear this, but I'm glad that you're OK.

If the car is totaled, sometimes the insurance company will let you buy it from them at a cheap price.

Then you might be able to sell it whole for parts or part it out. Some of those parts are very rare (seats, quarter windows, floor mats, chrystal, etc..).

Wow, that sounds like he was going at least 40mph instead of the 25 you stated above. Glad you made it out safe. Accidents like this are very unfortunate.

Do you have pictures of the wreck?

I've seen pics of a few of these cars after wrecks, and i've gotten in a few myself. Mark VIII's hold up pretty well in an accident.

Glad to hear you're okay, and sorry about your car. But the car is secondary... it's just a good thing nobody was hurt.

That's how I lost my 96LSC. Got hit head on in my subdivision by a drunk doing about 40 mph. Totaled my car and sent her to the grave as well. Glad you were able to walk away like I was.

Thank you

Thank you

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your kind words and encouragement. I am indeed blessed to be well after this incident.

BillCU, your idea of parting the car is very tempting, but as I mentioned in my original note, my wife would not be receptive to this. I did it years ago when my son totaled my '85 Buick Electra - stripped that puppy to the bare skeleton, parts everywhere. But I did recoup a good bit of money that way (without any internet, too!). However, that was back in NY where I had two storage sheds and a 1500 sq.ft. empty basement. No such space here in Greenville, SC. And in all fairness to my lovely wife, her patience with me and cars is getting VERY thin. You car guys can relate to this, I'm sure.

No, a quick, clean, complete liquidation is where I need to go from here. I haven't talked with the other party's insurance agent yet. I'll update you folks on that in the next few days. Also, I will eventually post a few pics, but it really bothers me to look at them right now.l

Thanks again,

Well, I am glad your car kept you safe. THat's what counts. But I am sorry for your loss, that must have been highly traumatic.

Ouch!! I lost my T-Bird that way!

Glad you walked away!!

Make them pay big for the car, because i can't believe that was at 25mph.

Dear 8isGreat,

Glad you were not seriously hurt..! I can offer some words of wisdom on the car value settlement. In May of 2006, I was hit from behind in my '98 Mark while stopped near an intersection waiting for a fire truck with lights 'a flashing' to cross in front of me. 'She' was a total loss, it was my 2nd Mark 8 - had it just short of a year. I did my homework and I suggest you do the same unless you like to 'leave money on the table' . The Insurance appraisers / adjusters job is to have you sign off on a lower car value. They are skilled, believe me.. The odds are that most people do not have a second car to drive the next day after the accident and they use this as a tool. I looked up the blue book from several sites and found in my case my '98 had an average retail value of $6.2K. One week after the accident they offered me $5.6K and as a reasonable person I offered to split the difference and to my surprise they refused! They basically told me to take it or leave it and they would be calling me every 30 days to see if I had changed my mind....... Well , that put an extra spark in me at that point and fortunately I had my '97 Mark to drive other wise I would have caved in like most folks under the pressure to get the cash to purchase another car.
The next step was actually very simple and takes very little time. I filed a small claims action against the person who hit me for the whole amount, $6.2K, based on blue book facts about my car plus the costs of $72.00 for the sheriff's office to 'serve' the defendant papers at 7:00 O'clock in the morning! That was my intent - to get the person who hit me to call their local insurance agent to 'respond' with proper actions. Remember the Insurance company is obligated for making me whole again for my loss, not theirs..! The day the person was served papers was the day the insurance company offered me my fair blue book amount, plus the $72.00 court/ serving fee.
If they had only been reasonable with my generous offer one week after the accident to split the difference of $530 bucks they would have also saved the 60 days for storage fees of the totaled car..!
I have not settled yet on my neck injuries that is pending...

Good Luck on your situation...

Thanks, Flowmaster!

Thanks, Flowmaster!

Dear Friends,

Again, thank you for your support.

Dear Flowmaster,

Thank you very much for taking the time to give me so much valuable advice. Coincidentally, a fellow here at work had a similar experience with his '85 Volvo which met a similar fate to ours. After several discussions with the insurance company he, too, ended up at the small claims option. Fortunately, he did not have to actually process the suit. Just the threat of going that route was enough to raise his settlement from about $800 to somewhere around $1700!

In my case, I heard from a claims agent for the first time late yesterday afternoon and she assured me an adjuster would be looking at my Mark VIII sometime today or tomorrow. I'll let everyone know how I fare as this unfolds.

Thanks again, and, by the way, I love your signature picture.

Live Long and Prosper

Dear Scotty96lsc,

If I'm reading right, it looks like you also had a '96 Mark VIII at one time and now have a '98. As I work on closing out this chapter on my 1st Mark VIII, my mind is already on the possibility of a 2nd. Since you seem to have firsthand experience with both Gen1 and Gen2 cars, could you share your thoughts and insights on how the two compare and which you prefer? I do know about the styling differences, the 2nd cup holder, the heated seat option, the power tilt/telescope wheel, the puddle lamps, the neon tail lamp and so forth, but how do you FEEL about the two? And what less obvious differences have you observed, ie. shift smoothness, quietness, engine smoothness, reliability, sound system, etc.

Thank you, and Have a nice day,

8isgreat P.S., I would love to hear from anyone else on this, too!

It's up for auction already 03/02/2007.

Again, such a waste

I would be interested in buying and fixing this car if your insurance company gives you the option to keep it. Please let me know.

I bought my 93 when it only had a few thousand miles on it back in 93 from the insurance pool. Hit all around, worse than this car. 14 years later it is still my favorite car of all time.
