Starter

Bobby.....I think you have to pull the trans or the K member.... :O Haven't had to change mine, but I'm pretty sure thats what you have to do.

Its a PITA to get to, the top bolt sucks....and you may have to remove the passenger side motor mount bolt and raise the engine a tad to clear that "pod" on the side of the engine oil pan. Let me say....taking the K member down about 3 inches would probably be faster. Here is a view of the starter with the K member out........

Undo the steering shaft, hang the motor and leave the suspension attached and just remove the K member bolts would be pretty easy.

Mark VIII starters don't go out that often... never heard of one going out actually even with 200k+ miles, how many miles on yours? Are you sure it's the starter?

I was thinking the same thing Serge. Probably an ignition(key, electric/mechanical) issue, or a bad battery terminal connection on those crappy cables.

I had the starter solenoid go bad on my '93. It dies from heat soak being so close to the exhaust manifold. After it was removed, I could get it to intermittently work on the test bench but replaced it anyways.

The top bolt is a pain to access but it can be done. No need to drop the K-member or anything. Even with the Kooks headers, we managed to get to the top bolt with a swivel socket and long extensions reaching out above the K-member through the lower wheel well area of the passenger side.

Check the wiring first. You should have 12V+ on the starter solenoid wire with the key turned to start.

There are 3 bolts holding it on if its stock, save your time and knuckles, you can only put 2 back in when re-installing.

Should have removed that back bolt on mine with my K member out, lol!

Obviously I figured you could unbolt the starter, but looking at the location, it didn't look feasible to get out of that hole. Do you have to drop the exhaust(on a stock M8) to get the pass. side cat out of the way, or does it come out in a different spot?

I'm not really sure, when I turn the key the engine starts and the starter keeps on turning.

I figured that the bendix was hanging up. The car is a 93 with 140K on it. It is leaking an extreme amount of oil in the front of the engine. Just don't have much time or money for someone else to deciper so I keep on adding oil.

The car runs incredible, it's just one thing after another although and I am starting to get discouraged.

For some reason I just can't let her go.

Thanks for the input.

Are you sure that the ingntion switch isn't sticking in the start position? My switch sticks sometimes but not in the full start position.

As far as the oil leak goes, it might just be the oil filter adapter plate gasket. It's a common problem and it's a cheap part.

I would venture to say that Bill is right....the ign switch is a VERY common failure and is probably sticking in the start position. I bet if you "help" it back into the run position, you'll never have the problem again.

As far as the oil leak goes....if its BAAAD when its running, you need to replace the oil filter adapter gasket. Not the funnest job, but definitally DON'T get discouraged if these are the only issues you're having. Search for the fix in the other sections.

I changed Tiffany's starter soleniod in the pits at the dragstrip...

didn't even touch the Kmember..

Just the 3 bolts and electrical connections, bout 15 minutes the starter was out.

took longer to put the new solenoid on the starter than it did to pull the starter out.

If the bendix is hanging up, you can probably get BY with changing out the solenoid rather than replaceing the whole starter..
Just a tip from the far side.. it worked for me!!!

Did you re-install the top bolt too? How did you do that, if you did?

I generally dont leave "extra bolts" laying around when I finish working on a car, so "YES" I installed ALL the bolts that came out of the starter.

Anything less would be "half *ssed".

I dont recall having a problem with it.. at all.

Might have been my "shorty ratchet" that made it go easier, dunno.. cant remember having any sort of issue with the 3rd bolt.

Now the 3rd bolt on the back of the AC compressor was a TOTAL PITA, but. I put it back as well.. when I replaced my crank sensor.
