where do i place the code reader, i borrowed one and i do not have a manual. thanks in advance if you can tell me.:)
 
Its located ON the drivers side strut tower "cover"(RED in picture), not where my hand is, but infront of the master cylinder. Make sure you post your codes here and we'll help you find answers.

ON the strut tower COVER(that red thing in my picture). Its attached to the side of it with a plastic cover that says "Diagnostic Port".

Mine no longer stays attached to the strut tower cover, but here you can see the black cover that it looks like its "plugged" into. You have to remove it from the cover, and pull the little cap off, this will expose the connectors in-which you plug the Code Reader into. :D

Wow.....my engine WAS VERY DIRTY! You guys weren't freaking kidding, rofl!
 
Haha.....dude, thats the picture I took from the Nology wire install....remember my post about pressure washing my engine on the other site...probably the reason I'm over here now? Member the "big fishy chasing the little fishies" on my driveway? Yeah...its clean now!

hey guys this is sandabbe's son.
the car is actually mine.

right now we're having problems getting the car started, it starts but you just have to hold the starter for about 20-30 seconds, we think that we might just have to get a new o2 sensor, but we're also gonna change out the spark plugs and fuel filter, any other suggestions to make it start a little easier?
 
The starter won't last long like that.

Air, spark and fuel.

Check for any air restriction and/or leaks between the MAF and throttle body.

Check fuel pressure. Try to turn on the key for 3 seconds and then back to off without trying to start it. Repeat several times. This will force the fuel pump to cycle and prime the fuel system in case there is a fuel problem. Change the fuel filter.

Change spark plugs and possibly spark plug wires.

02 Sensors won't cause hard starting issues. You either have a spark issue(not likely) or a fuel issue(sounds like your symptoms), or you're not getting enough air, or too much air to the engine.

You need to let us know what the symptoms are.

Also.....a real common problem is the Idle Air Control Valve failing. This controls the idle of the car and if it is stuck, the car will hard start.

Try giving the car a slight amount of gas(push down the gas pedal VERY slightly) when trying to start it, this will eccentially be using your foot as the control for the idle. Give it NO MORE than 1/4 throttle, and if it doesn't work right away, than its not the problem.

Like JP said....check fuel pressure...there are two ways that you NEED to do this.

First, have someone kneel on the passenger side of the car by the rear tire and listen for the fuel pump. When you turn the key ON(lights on the dash come on) the fuel pump will "prime" for 3 seconds, have that person listen for this. The pump should be a steady buzz, and not a crunchy or intermittant sound.

Second, after you "prime" the fuel pump, you need to go to the little schradder valve on the engine. Its located on the fuel rail by the oil cap and has a little plastic cap on it. Its best described as looking like a tire valve stem used to fill air in a tire.

Remove this cap, and with a small screw driver and a rag in hand, depress the little valve inside and see how much fuel squirts out. BE SURE NOT to have your face/eyes by this as it may spray out.......use common sense. Also do NOT try this on a hot engine.

If it squirts a good amount out we'll move onto the next step. If there is only a drizzle, than you may have a bad fuel pump or something of that sort.

Let us know what happends......oh, don't waste too much time trying to get the codes, they probably won't tell you whats wrong because of the fact that the problem is when you're starting.

Ditto on changing the fuel filter. The plugs WILL cause starting problems, but only over time, not something that will just stop working one day, so wait on this.

well we're thinking the plugs may be a problem because the car was sitting in our friends front yard for about two years before we came along and tryed to start it. is there some way the they might have gotten corroded or somethng from sitting that long?

2 years!? :eek:

I would think it's a fuel issue. I would get as much fuel out as I could, put 5 gallons fresh premium in with a good fuel conditioner and a new fuel filter, no questions asked, before I went much further.
