intermittent brake noise

There is a squeeking noise coming from the front left brakes, it's intermittent, I can usually hear it reflected off the highway wall barrier. It doesn't happen when I put my foot on the brake or turn the wheel, just regular driving, sounds like something is loose... any ideas?

Some ideas yes... do you have rotor warpage? (steering wheel shakes when you apply the brakes)

How many miles are on the front hubs?

Time to go back inside and see who did what wrong.....

I'm the person that worked on it, don't throw me under the bus yet! :D

Like I said in the PM, I need to know if depressing the pedal when you hear it changes the sound at all. If not, that its not the brakes, if so, than the pads are most likely "glazed". I used an abundance of anti-sieze so we're good to go on all the surfaces that may be moving.

What brand rotors and pads did you use, my experience with ceramics was that they tend to squeel more than the regular semi-metallic pads.

I'm wondering if "I" should have done the break in procedure. :( Serge....you did return pretty quickly after you left(maybe 5 minutes) so let me know if the squeek goes away when you press the brakes.

Shawn....that was my first guess.....

Ok.....good.

So it IS a squeek though, not a chirp, rattle, grind or any of that, a definite squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek?

OK well I drove the car around some more and the noise when it comes up actually does stop when I press the brakes... the noise is more of a chirp than a squeek, almost like some bird singing... I did a proper break in though, 5 or 6 times I got up to 50-60 and came back down to 20-30mph without extra hard breaking and I never came to a complete stop.

I wonder if Jesse torqued your wheels?! :D

Seriously thought I would wait and see if the problem gets worse... at this point it is very hard to say what is wrong without taking a ride in your car.

Haha....nope, didn't torque them. :D I agree with Max....a chirp everyone once in a while is more of a neusance if anything. NOTHING could be loose to cause this noise, so you don't have any worries.

I had the same problem with my 93 mark 8 and found it was a Ball Joint. I also found that I needed to replace the lower control arms and i was glad I did. Did the job myself. It sounded like a piece of metal loose when I drove over bumps and I also heard it from the wall barriers when driving on the highway's here in new york city. Jack up the front end and take a good look at all the rubber boots and replace if rusted or cracked. You can also move the wheel a bit and see that there is "Play" in any joints.

Hope this helps.

I went outside today and the front end of the 96 was slammed on the ground... time for new front struts... can this have been causing the noise?
