if i was to put gears in my 98, say i put in 4:10's what has to be done for the car to act right. i know i cant slap gears in and thats all, what has to be done in order for the car to shift right and all that, besides the actual swapping of gears what else is involved with these electronic nightmare cars!!

You need to get a chip. Some claim you need to change the speedo gears... well I never did it on my 98 and never had a problem. My speedometer was accurate to the mile proven by the GPS.

Speed sensors are up front on Gen2 so no problems, but you will need to get some drivability issues handled, and that's where the chip comes in. Don't forget to get a Driveshaft (Reinhart)also.

Gear swaps on Gen 1's only require a speedo gear change, Gen 2's get the speed off of the ABS sensors up front.

Jamie....I'd try a balanced/straightened 2 piece honestly. People always condemn them because of the two piece design, but they don't take into consideration that they are usually vibrating after the car has 60k+ miles on them with the original u-joints still installed.

Bob's 98 had a vibration WITHOUT gears and I had Max's old 2-piece sent out to the driveshaft place where they replaced the u-joints and balanced it at 15K rpms.....faster than it actually spins with gears. His car is 100% better now.

The only reason I recommend this is because you have access to plenty of 2 piece shafts and for 83 bucks, you can't beat it to get "re-built".

You also need a trac-loc differential or else the gear upgrade will be pointless as you will be spinning tires all the way down the 1/4 mile.

Oh yeah....I assumed he was getting that, haha.

So, Jamie....what happend to my quote I gave you?

a new baby!! im just getting info to prepare for this later down the road i want to do it, but i cant right now. i just want to have everything in my head and know what i have to do before i start it.

Not sure if you can do a search on this... but you can get a FMS install kit that has everything you need for about $79 then you need to get new axle bearings for the Cobra $29 or so I believe. And then you need trac-lock(sp) $210 at summitracing. I would also change the driveshaft $300-500. Obviously you will need a transmission cooler, not sure if you already got one or not.

Gears won't necessarily affect the trans enough to "need" a trans cooler, but regardless if you have gears or not, you should get one.
