Hey everyone--would love some advice. My grandfather recently gave me his 1979 Lincoln Continental Coupe. It has about 80,000 miles and is in great shape but I would love to find a restorer that could make it perfect. Any advice on where I should go? Thanks in advance, Ari ari@schochet.net

Ari.....well, first thing we need to know is your location, second, what type of resto do you want to do? Pretty much ANY mechanic can install Repo parts to restore it, but as far as a frame up resto, you'd need to take to a specialty hot rod shop that will have a rotisseree and stuff.

Second question would be how much money do you want to budget for the project.

A full frame off restoration will cost 10's of thousands of dollars while a hack job can be had obviously for much less. Being a '79, a good investment would be a parts car and a friendly body shop who would restore the car over time and not make it a full time project. Some parts may have to be fabricated to maintain authenticity and that will become costly quick.

Regardless, they are beautiful cars.

I am located right outside New York City. The biggest problem that I have is that the back window has a leak so water has gotten inside. I need to have the window recaulked--glazed ect and I think I would like to have the carpet redone. The only other repairs that I can see is rust on the back bumper--so would consider getting a new one and the plastic/wood/fake wood is cracked on the steering wheel--not even sure if this can be replaced.

I am just clueless--would love to be able to find a specialty shop that could do all of this and a friend found this website as my starting point.

Ari....

The window is a simple fix, call ANY local Windshield replacement company and they will send someone out to remove it and reseal it with new rubber.

The carpet.....ANY local upolstery shop, or if you want to do some of the work yourself, remove the seats and console and replace the carpet with this...

Kinda spendy, but its the first place I looked....

1979 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL MARK V 2 DOOR CARPET, 01 BLACK 80/20 (Non-Returnable) $190

The upolstery shop should be able to handle your steering wheel also.

The back bumper can be taken care of at ANY local body shop.

I'm in Cali....so I can't be too much help for you locally, but check your phone book and call to get prices.

Not being coy--live in New Jersey about 5 miles from NYC. Really wish I had a good referral to a repair/body shop around here. Ari

See if there are any cruise nights locally. There you will find a lot of hot rods, classics, and customs who will surely be able to recommend good reliable body shops.

I used to know a body shop in North Bergen on Kennedy Blvd. around 25th St., I don't know if they're still there. They always had lots of customs in there.
